GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Provides primary health care under the supervision of a physician including responsibility for the initiation and maintenance of patients in a family planning/prenatal regime; participates with staff and other departments and agencies in an interdisciplinary approach to patient care; provides leadership in all aspects of the family planning program; maintains right to refuse to examine or manage a patient based on professional judgement; performs professional duties involving planning, coordinating, developing, and implementing programs under the supervision of the program supervisor; performs related duties as required.
STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Plans for area and program needs and communicates same to supervisor;
Participates in decision making processes including purchase of appropriate supplies
as well as the delivery of primary health services for clients as protocols describe;
Assesses the patient's health needs by obtaining and evaluating the medical and social history;
Performs appropriate health screening procedures including, but not limited to heart, lungs, thyroid, abdomen, breast and pelvic examination;
Estimates gestational age by pelvic examination;
Obtains specimens and does testing and evaluation of related laboratory tests;
Selects and dispenses oral contraceptives and changes pill modality, discontinues asneeded under medical standing orders;
Fits diaphragms and instructs in their use under medical standing orders;
Identifies vaginitis and sexually transmissible diseases and selects appropriate treatment under medical standing orders;
Dispenses medication under medical standing orders;
Recommends non-prescription contraception and natural family planning when indicated;
Provides counseling and teaching about community and/or personal health programs and family planning and related health needs;
Refers patients with suspected abnormal conditions to the supervising physician or other medical resources;
Refers individuals to other professionals and/or community resources:
Conducts family planning education sessions for patients and community groups:
Maintains and reviews patient records, including referral and follow-up systems;
Participates in the development and/or maintenance of quality care standards;
Participates in the inservice education of agency staff;
Updates professional practices through reading, conferences, professional meetings, etc.;
Keeps abreast of federal, state and local laws and regulations concerning personal and/or community health activities;
Provides input into program goals and objectives.
