Description

Position reports to Fire Lieutenant. (Summary: The Firefighter is responsible for fire fighting entailing the combating, extinguishing and preventing of fires and saving life and property. A Firefighter is responsible for rapidly and efficiently performing various duties under emergency conditions frequently involving considerable hazard. The Firefighters work includes routine duties in the maintenance of Firefighting equipment and Fire Department property. The Firefighter is responsible for carrying out the specific orders and directions as received from a superior officer. Considerable independence of judgment and action is allowed in circumstances of extreme urgency where referral to a supervisor for instruction is not possible.) Responds to emergency incidents on assigned vehicle and performs tactical duties as assigned. The Firefighter works directly under the direction of a supervisor. Responsible for connecting hose to hydrants or fire apparatus. Joins hose sections together and connects nozzles to hose. Enters burning buildings with hose lines. Operates nozzles and applies the appropriate stream of water on fires. Operates hand fire extinguishers and similar equipment in extinguishing fires. Raises, lowers, and climbs ladders. Performs ventilation procedures as needed and assigned. Answers emergency alarms, administers emergency care to injured persons, and removes and rescues persons from danger. Performs salvage operations such as placing salvage covers, sweeping water, removing debris, and placing smoke ejectors. Attends instruction and training sessions in such subjects as fire fighting methods, equipment operation, first aid/emergency medical care, and street hydrant locations. Performs cleaning maintenance in the Fire Station. Also performs maintenance on fire equipment and apparatus. Assists in inspection of businesses, commercial and industrial buildings and places of public assembly for existing fire hazards. As assigned, may be required to perform functions of a Driver-Engineer in the Driver-Engineer's absence. Specific duties will involve safely and efficiently driving ladder trucks, fire engines and emergency vehicles while responding to emergency incidents and while returning to the station. Position is responsible for the operation of pumps to maintain a safe and adequate water volume and pressure.

 
Position Requirements Must have knowledge of the operation of all apparatus and equipment, streets within geographic area, and methods used in combating, extinguishing and preventing fires and in rescue work.

Performs approved emergency medical care.

Must have ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Must have ability to react quickly and calmly under duress and strain.

Must have ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with fellow employees and the public.

Must be high school graduate or the equivalent.

Must have knowledge of rules and regulations of the Fire Department.

Must be capable of climbing ladders and working at heights and in confined areas.

Mustl meet all qualifications as set forth in the Georgia Fire Fighter Standards and Training Act.

Must possess a valid driver's license.

Must be willing to be cross-trained and serve as an Emergency Medical Technician. (Time frame subject to class availability.)

Must demonstrate on and off duty conduct that does not bring discredit to the department or the City.

Must be able to perform assigned duties with or without accommodation relating to prolonged and arduous work under adverse conditions.

Must have ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.

Must have skill in the operation of all Firefighting and rescue equipment including emergency vehicles.

Should have interest and willingness to assist in community efforts throughout the municipality.

Mechanical aptitude desired.

Must have knowledge of interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

Should have knowledge of telephone techniques and etiquette.

 
Physical/Environmental Requirements Exposure extreme weather conditions. Perform manual tasks such as lifting, pulling, pushing, climbing and walking over rough terrain. May come in contact with poisonous, flammable, and explosive gases, chemicals or other hazardous materials that might have immediate or long-term effects on health.
