Description

SUMMARY:

The Buyer-Material Planner is responsible for ensuring adequate amounts of materials on hand at all times for production while balancing the need to minimize inventory carrying cost and obsolescence. Additionally, this role is responsible for monitoring material requirements and establishing delivery schedules for purchased components to avoid production interruptions. A key responsibility of the Buyer-Material Planner II is to find potential suppliers, negotiate prices and terms, and issue purchase orders.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists in purchasing materials, supplies and services at the most favorable terms for the organization using available material planning tools and software
  • Make purchase decisions in accordance with company procedures and regulations
  • Qualifies vendors, evaluates bids, and negotiates prices and terms for purchased goods and services
  • Identifies and develops preferred suppliers using criteria such as quantity and quality of commodities, price, and delivery performance
  • Monitors material planning to maintain appropriate inventory levels consistent with targeted inventory goals and as set by management
  • Monitors supplier performance by ensuring that product is delivered as scheduled and meets specifications; maintains appropriate files and records of meetings with suppliers to ensure company requirements are met and that supplier is aware of their performance
  • Handles correspondence concerning over-shipments, delivery shortages, changes in quantity, delivery dates, and prices and report such changes to the interested parties in a timely manner as required
  • Collaborates with department managers to clarify specifications for purchase orders
  • Processes non-conforming material requests with suppliers
  • Authorizes payment for purchases by reviewing invoices and related documentation
  • Maintains accuracy of item planning data, including lead-time, ordering method, minimum and maximum inventory level, pricing, current supplier information, current purchase order data, etc.
  • Supports, communicates, reinforces and defends the mission, values and culture of the organization
  • Adheres to all quality and safety standards
  • Supports other projects and performs duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

Associate'S degree in procurement and/or related business field, Bachelor's degree preferred

WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • Previous buying experience strongly preferred, or ability to demonstrate comparable knowledge and skills
  • Working knowledge/experience in Material Requirements Planning and inventory management principles

OTHER JOB RELATED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of commodities in area of specialization
  • Strong negotiating skills
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills. Proficient with MS Office suite and SAP
  • Ability to work well with a team
  • Willingness to take initiative
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment
  • Strong written and verbal communication
  • Must be able to speak, read and understand English
