Our ever-growing EMPOWER Program has a brand new location in Morehead City. The Activities Coordinator  is responsible for the planning, facilitating, and implementation of recreational and wellness activities as well as assisting in the overall operations of all phases of the program. This position is responsible for ensuring best practices and supports based on the personal outcomes of the individual and/or family. This position has direct supervision of the direct care recreation para-professionals.

  • Represents Empower program to parents, participants, potential staff, and stakeholders.
  • Plans, facilitates, implements, and supervises the safe and therapeutic recreation of the program including field trips, scheduled activities, and daily programming.
  • Arranges for all program logistics and appropriate activity planning and implementation including weekend and weeknight respite events.
  • Ensures staff are trained on health, safety, and emergency procedures and protocol, as well as how to assess environmental safety.
  • Assists Empower Director with management of program budgets.
  • Assists in the recruitment of direct support staff including interviews, job shadowing, and hiring process.
  • Reviews participant files and is engaged with participants in order to fully understand participant capabilities and appropriate staff assignments.
  • Ensures groups and programs are developed and executed with consideration to participant needs, interests, and abilities.
  • Research new ideas for programs and activities taking into account the participant's suggestions, interests, and abilities.
  • Coordinates the scheduling of Recreation Paraprofessionals. Ensures Recreation Paraprofessionals are working appropriately scheduled hours.
  • Anticipates staffing needs and responds to schedule changes, taking the appropriate action to avoid problems.
  • Provides supervision, coaching, role-modeling, and counseling to Recreation Paraprofessionals.
  • Supervise directly and indirectly all program participants.
  • Ensures staff documentation of participant participation is completed daily and in accordance with regulatory expectations.
  • Serves as primary person for medication administration. Notifies parents of medication(s) on hand or need of medications. Assures MAR is kept up to date and notifies Director immediately of issues with medication administration or MAR compliance. Assures the administrative staff have been designated and trained as a backup in providing medication.
  • Conducts regular meetings with Recreation Paraprofessionals to provide an overview of the day, provide training and education. Discuss concerns or services provided.
  • Establishes staff education meetings, at least monthly to facilitate staff competence and professional growth.
  • Responsible for preparing and conducting performance reviews of all direct reports.
  • Ensures monthly drills and logs are completed.
  • Safeguards temperature logbooks, cleaning logs, and vehicle safety logs are complete as required.
  • Confirms weekly that vehicles are kept orderly and neat as well as gas tanks being full.
  • Ensures staff cleaning is completed daily as required as well as that building is kept organized and visitor ready at all times.
  • Helps to develop program publicity and disseminates information.
  • Assists with setting fundraising goals and implementing fundraising activities.
  • Promotes positive team and employee interaction and communication.
  • Assists in maintaining adequate records on all programs.
  • Assists Empower Director in the overall management of the program as needed.
  • Implements appropriate crisis response for any emergency, i.e. health or medically related, or an environmental emergency.
  • Drives van or company vehicle when needed to transport participants.
  • Assists with the ongoing evaluation of all programming, implementing corrective action as needed to improve operations considering participant needs/interests and with special regard to emerging rehabilitation or therapeutic philosophies as they apply to the program philosophy.
  • Assumes responsibilities of Director in their absence.
  • Assists Empower Director in organizing and leading Parent Advisory Board meetings quarterly. This includes sending out invitations, taking notes from meetings, and advising the Director of needs from meetings.
  • Maintains basic knowledge of and follows regulations as identified in the Innovations Waiver, Medicaid, and other North Carolina funding sources.
  • Posts participant activities on Facebook at least weekly.
  • Posts relevant information for families on Facebook and/or Reminders as needed such as closures, events, or holidays.
  • Protects the rights of those persons served and supports the right to dignity, humane care, and freedom from abuse, neglect, exploitation, and mistreatment.
  • Ensures completion of required training within prescribed timeframes for self and staff.
  • Provides training to new staff including Welligent, HRIS, Time and Attendance platform, Relias, etc., and will be the first point of contact with concerns or questions for staff.
  • Follows and assures compliance with all Easterseals Policies and Procedures.
  • Demonstrates Easterseals valued behaviors of Accountability, Commitment, and Caring as appropriate to the position

Supervisory Responsibility: This position will supervise Recreational Paraprofessionals and may supervise other support staff in the absence of the Empower Director.

Position Requirements


  • Bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by an entity approved by USDOE or CHEA in therapeutic recreation (CTRS desirable), recreation, special education, adapted physical education or related field preferred.
  • Two (2) years of administrative or supervisory experience in an inclusive setting is preferred.
  • Must have a valid, unrestricted, state-appropriate driver’s license and personal vehicle insurance.
  • Satisfactory criminal background check and acceptable motor vehicle record.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Measurable knowledge, skills, and experience in therapeutic programming and personal care assistance with populations of individuals with physical and/or cognitive disabilities.
  • Experience with personnel supervision, interpersonal relationships, discipline, training, and leadership.
  • Experience in organizing recreational activities in group settings.
  • Experience in and ability to train staff in the implementation of recreational activities, personal care, activity adaptations, etc.
  • Ability to observe participant and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures.
  • Ability to supervise and communicate effectively with staff members in order to achieve a beneficial and therapeutic program.
  • Ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to specific activities.
  • Ability to analyze and provide assistance with activity and personnel problem areas.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and ESUCP’s EHR.
