POSITION SUMMARY
The Lead Clinical Nurse (LCN) shall coordinate quality patient care utilizing OR resources including available operating room, staff and equipment. The LCN will also provide the daily operational leadership for the OR. Initiate patient care assignments direct the provision of comprehensive OR Nursing care, delegate duties to appropriate personnel, and supervise their work. The LCN will provide direct OR Nursing care when required to optimize workflow. Participates in the evaluation of the quality of patient care, including turnover times. Serves as a role model for others, maintaining a high level of professional conduct. Utilizes advanced leadership skills and problem-solving process. Maintains a professional working relationship with physicians and other departments. Will take operating room call. May have to work varied, odd hours when on call; and prepare for emergency cases on very short notice. Collaborates with and reports to Director of Surgical Services. Follows AORN standards of care and ensure AORN standards are followed in each operating room daily.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Provides daily direction to OR staff nurses and scrub technicians. Interacts with and relates positively with ancillary departments, other Nurses, and health care providers including temporary intermittent personnel as requested or deemed necessary.
- Leads the OR team by identifying, distributing, and balancing workload and tasks among OR employees in accordance with established workflow, skill level and/or occupational specialization.
- In collaboration with the Director of Surgical Services, approves time off requests, balances staff self-schedule, and ensures adequate daily staffing for the OR.
- Assesses needs and provides input to Director of Surgical Services and Nursing Education to facilitate the implementation of programs that meet the training needs of team members in theory, methods and techniques as required.
- Assists the Director of Surgical Services with preparation of reports, maintain records, and an analysis of work accomplishments and administrative information. Including daily workflow, turnovers and delays and monthly administrative reports.
- Coordinate with the Director of Surgical Services to obtaining resources and securing needed information or decisions from the Manager on major work problems and issues that arise.
- Assist the Director of Surgical Services in assessing areas of opportunity for improvement in patient care, scheduling, and resource management.
- Manages leave considering appropriate coverage and according to Department policy in consultation with the Director of Surgical Services.
- Informs the Director of Surgical Services of performance issues/problems, makes recommendations for improvement or necessary action.
- Accountable to monitor all aspects of patient care, assures the documentation is complete including procedural coding and charges.
- Collaborates with members of the surgical and multidisciplinary teams in assessing, planning, and implementing surgical interventions.
- Maintains professional knowledge and proficiency in Unit specific nursing knowledge and practice through continuing education. Maintains skill and competency by performing direct patient care and meets all responsibilities as outlined in the Clinical Nurse (Operating Room) job description.
- Utilizes Standards of Care to develop, implement, evaluate, and revise an appropriate problem- oriented nursing plan of care for the peri-operative patient, and management of the OR suite in general.
- Monitors supplies and instruments to ensure a sterile instrument or product is delivered to the operative field.
- Identifies potential to increase revenue or reduce expenses.
- Identifies, initiates, and participates in nursing studies, audits, as well as performance improvement programs, safety workshops, continuing education seminars, et cetera.
- Responsible for electronic health records data entry pertinent to patient service role.
- Ensure proper PPE is always worn while on duty including but not limited to, face mask, gloves, gown, isolation gown, NIOSH-approved N95 filtering facepiece respirator or higher, if available), and eye or face shield.
- Complete all donning and doffing tasks in a safe acceptable method and discard of used PPE accordingly. (see CDC website for most current updates)
- Complete task training for all routine cleaning and decontamination processes for all surfaces contaminated by a communicable disease to ensure a high level of patient, visitor, employee and external customer satisfaction.

Physical:
Work requires prolonged walking, long periods of standing, maintaining balance, reaching and bending, frequent sitting and crouching as well as occasionally kneeling. Agility and the ability to lift, pull and bend are required to move patients to and from beds, wheelchairs, stretchers, et cetera. Must be able to lift occasionally up to 50 lbs. and pull up to 100lbs. Work involves prolonged lifting up to 10lbs. and pulling up to 50 lbs. Sensory Requirements are far vision, near vision, color vision, depth perception, hearing norm speech, hearing over head pages and telephone use with frequent ability to see fine details. Ability for prolonged simple grasping and fine manipulation of both hands and frequent firm grasping and use of keyboard.
Mental:
Contacts often require tact and sensitivity as those related to stressful situation such as death, dying, and catastrophic illnesses. Must be able to prioritize and use good judgment. Incumbent must be able to coordinate a variety of issues while being frequently interrupted. Position requires prolonged concentration, handling multiple priorities in stressful situation, adaption to shift work, frequent coping with anger/fear/hostility of others in a calm way, handle high degree of flexibility, work in areas that are close and crowded and occasionally cope with high level of stress, make decisions under high pressure, manage altercations and work alone.
Environmental:
While in the position, you may be frequently exposed to infectious diseases, chemical agents, extremes in temperature or humidity, hazardous or moving equipment, loud noises, occasional dust, fumes, gases and unprotected heights.
