Job Summary

The Food Systems and Garden Specialist increases access to healthy foods by providing First Foods educational opportunities to the community and maintaining community garden sites. The specialist plans, implements, and maintains all aspects of the community garden sites. The Specialist is an active member of Pamanaknúwit (health promotion). The Specialist is an active member of the First Foods and Food Systems Workgroup, a collaboration of staff between the CTUIR Cultural Resources Protection Program and Yellowhawk’s Pamanaknúwit team. All duties and responsibilities will be performed in accordance with the Yellowhawk Mission and Vision statement.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Coordinates the Food Systems Assessment and develops materials, policies and plans based on Food Systems Assessment findings.
  2. Actively participates as a member of the First Foods and Food Systems workgroup and assists with planning and implementing activities within this workgroup.
  3. Assists with the planning and ongoing maintenance of Yellowhawk Garden Sites. This includes upkeep on the appearance of the garden sites, creating an inviting space for the community.
  4. Assists with recruitment and coordination of volunteers for the garden and provides opportunities, such as garden days, for community members to assist in garden activities.
  5. Assists in the distribution of garden produce to community members.
  6. Collaborates with CTUIR education programs and schools to provide garden education to youth.
  7. Actively participates as a team member of the Pamanaknúwit Team (health promotion) and works towards meeting quarterly objectives in the Yellowhawk Annual Work Plan.
  8. Collaborates with the Pamanaknúwit Team to identify and implement strategies for the CTUIR community that increase access to healthy foods, opportunities for physical activity, breastfeeding support, and nutrition education.
  9. Collect and use data to identify and implement health promotion strategies.
  10. Write and produce leaflets, posters, videos and brochures to provide timely and accurate health education messages.
  11. Identifies areas of improvement through performance management tracking and conducts quality improvement studies.
  12. May require some grant management, data collecting and reporting.
  13. Assists with the planning and implementation of the Backyard Garden Program.
  14. Plans and facilitates garden education classes for CTUIR community members, including Seed to Supper.
  15. Other duties as assigned.
 
Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  1. High School degree or GED.
  2. Master Gardener Certification or must obtain certification within one year.
  3. 2-3 years’ experience in First Foods gathering and preserving.
  4. Experience working with community and school groups.
  5. Knowledgeable regarding First Foods; i.e. hunting, gathering and fishing.
  6. Knowledgeable in preparing, cooking, and preserving healthy and traditional foods.
  7. Must demonstrate ability to facilitate Food Systems and preservation classes.
  8. Individual must have excellent communication skills, both verbal and writing.
  9. Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain insurance requirements to operate General Services Administration vehicles.
  10. Represents Yellowhawk with a respected and viable presence in the community.
  11. Must submit to and pass a reference and criminal background check.
  12. Must submit to and pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.
  13. Must submit proof of COVID-19 vaccination.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Associate’s Degree or equivalent in related field.
  2. Experience and/or knowledge of history, culture and health needs of Native American communities preferred.
  3. Experience in a Tribal healthcare system.
