SUMMARY:

The Medications Room Technician is responsible for assisting the practitioners in ordering, dispensing and tracking patients’ use of medications through drug samples, the Indigent Patient Program (IPP), and clinic-stock medications. In addition, the Medications Room Tech will maintain the clinic pharmacy in an orderly and well-stocked condition.

 
Position Requirements

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Inventories, orders and stocks supplies and medications including samples and IPP medications.

  • Maintains patient medication handout files.

  • Assists practitioners in locating medications and supplies, pricing, Medi-Cal formulary eligibility, and other information as needed.

  • Completes a yearly inventory.

  • Maintains good relationships with the pharmaceutical company sales representatives.

  • Monitors medications and supplies for outdates and disposes of outdated items properly.

  • Keeps running inventories on injectables, samples, pre-pack medications, and other medications dispensed from the pharmacy.

  • Maintains a refrigerator temperature log.

  • Dispenses medications to patients.

  • Notes accurately and completely any communication with the patients necessary to their care and any dispensing of medications in the patients’ medical charts.

  • Maintains current and accurate pharmaceutical company and patient files for the IPP.

  • Uses computers to track IPP patients and general correspondence.

  • Assists the Clinic Nurse Coordinator in variety of tasks as necessary.

  • Adherence to ODCHC’s attendance policy.

  • Other duties and responsibilities as designated by supervisor.

     

    QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to work as a member of a team in order to communicate and/or solicit pertinent information to and from other team members and support team decisions.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and exercise sound and responsible judgment.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, written and verbal.Ability to establish constructive working relationships with all levels of management and employees in a staff of varied and diverse backgrounds.

  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

  • Ability to accurately chart information.

  • Ability to promote effective communication between the patient and the primary care provider.

  • Computer ability, including facility with databases, spreadsheets, and word processing software.

     

    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or GED.

  • One year related experience and/or training in a medical setting.

  • Completion of accredited Medical Assistant training program or completion of a Pharmacy Technician Certificate program.

     

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Medical Assistant Certificate or Pharmacy Tech certificate, venipuncture certificate, and injection certificate.

     

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    NONE

     

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Speaking and hearing sufficient to communicate effectively by phone or in person, at normal volumes.

  • Vision adequate to read correspondence, computer screens, and forms.

  • Good manual dexterity.

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
