JOB SUMMARY:

The Youth Counselor position provides direct service to participants with a focus on inspiring youth to make positive decisions for themselves and their futures. This part-time position provides direct service to participants primarily in 3rd-9th grades in the Strong Fast Fit program, with a focus on Native American, Hmong, East African, and Latine participants and families. Strong Fast Fit focuses on diabetes prevention programming, designed to educate and empower youth to live healthy and active lifestyles, in culturally specific communities.

Hours:

10-15 hrs/wk Monday – Friday afterschool hours

Shifts and sites vary based on program need and individual schedule

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Implement comprehensive programming:

  • Recruit and maintain program participants by providing program presentations to schools and youth serving agencies
  • Plan, prepare and facilitate/co-facilitate age appropriate and culturally sensitive educational activities utilizing Strong Fast Fit and other Girls & Youth curriculum
  • Create and maintain a safe learning environment that is student-centered, mission-focused, and accessible to a diverse student body
  • Support communication with participants and families, and organize and support retention efforts to maintain participants

Administration

  • Collect registration forms, participant demographic information, and track program attendance
  • Deliver and obtain program evaluation information from participants for program quality assurance and reporting purposes
  • Attend and participate in program team meetings

RELATIONSHIPS:

This position reports to the Strong Fast Fit Program Coordinator who reports to the Girls and Youth Director. The incumbent will interact with Girls and Youth staff, Minneapolis Public Schools contacts and Community Organization contacts. Critical relationships will include program participants and families.

 

 
Position Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four year college or university in kinesiology, physical education, youth development; or four years related experience in the field
  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs
  • Strong knowledge of Native Community
  • Ability to manage time between office, program implementation, community events, field trips and family nights
  • Ability to effectively maintain information for recording, purposes and maintain HIPAA act standards
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills to relate with participants and parents/guardians
  • Exceptional conflict management and resolution skills
  • Demonstrates excellent customer service skills
  • Demonstrates ability to work with a variety of cultures, perspectives and backgrounds
  • Current Red Cross CPR and First Aid Basic certification or ability to obtain with 30 days of hire

Preferred:

  • Community Health Worker Certification (or ability to work towards certification with the support of YWCA)
  • One-two years program leadership
  • Experience organizing large-scaled events
  • 2-3 years of experience in successful data-base management, program evaluation and outcome reporting

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to perform and actively participate in 60-minute exercise sessions in various formats including, but not limited to, weight training, running, swimming, cycling, low-impact and high impact aerobics, circuit training, and various team sports.
  • Ability to work outside.
