JOB SUMMARY

YWCAMPLS seeks an experienced, executive level nonprofit leader. The Chief Development Officer (CDO) serves as a critical member of the YWCA MPLS executive team and works collaboratively with team members to establish and execute a plan for significant growth.

This position will be directly responsible for successfully creating, leading and implementing an integrated resource development strategy and developing new relationships, while maintaining existing relationships to build the organization's visibility, impact, and financial resources. In doing so, the CDO will be a key partner in fostering a culture of philanthropy and assuring the implementation of strategies to develop donors and contributions to support the organization. Key areas of focus include the continued development and strengthening of the Organizational Advancement and Marketing and Communications departments.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Revenue Generating:

  • Lead the efforts to raise $4-5 million annually – with plans to grow to $6 million in the next three years through individuals, corporate, foundations and/or state/city funding
  • Identify and implement new revenue streams, with a focus on increasing sustainable unrestricted, private revenue
  • Lead the growth of an intentional strategy to build individual giving with major and sustaining gifts as well as estate planning and bequests
  • Partner with the CEO, executive and senior leadership teams, and development staff to deepen existing funder relationships and cultivate new supporters
  • Evaluate and drive the use of new technology funding vehicles including social media and online giving, ensuring efficiency and impact effectiveness of the organization's website and online tools for engaging prospect leads and supporters
  • With executive leadership, plan and evaluate financial needs and fundraising plans for the organization's future

 

Board and Senior Staff Leadership:

  • Work closely with the CEO, executive team, governing board, and the Development Board Committee to lead the creation and implementation of the organization’s advancement strategy and objectives.
  • Serve as staff liaison to the Development and Governance Committees of the board
  • Attend board meetings and board committee meetings and report on development and governance activities as needed, in coordination with the CEO
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to support media and public relations strategy; serve as an ambassador and spokesperson for the organization and articulate our mission to external constituents

 

Internal Management and Infrastructure:

  • Leveraging its culture and productivity as a positive, cohesive, highly functioning team, recruit, coach, lead and mentor the development staff. Continually review departmental infrastructure to ensure support of the organization's revenue growth goals
  • Effectively manage the development department's day-to-day operations, budget, and income forecasts
  • Oversee the engagement staff in managing a highly functioning volunteer services program and in planning special events (fundraising and engagement), while critically evaluating return on investments
  • Oversee the institutional giving staff in identifying and pursuing grant requests for proposal, and developing strategic corporate partnerships while critically evaluating the administrative costs of implementation
  • In collaboration with VP of Marketing & Communications, focus on communications to ensure consistent messaging and branding in all print and online donor communication vehicles
  • Provide strategic and marketing oversight to all donor materials, and strategic support on the full range of external stakeholder communications
  • Partner with the CFO and finance and accounting staff to sustain efficient, effective, and transparent financial tracking and reporting processes
  • Develop clear processes and collaborate with all other departments within the organization to create an understanding of and appreciation for the development function. Foster an environment of cohesiveness, collaboration, and a culture of philanthropy

 

Measures of First Year Success:

On-Boarding:

  • Thoughtfully integrate into YWCAMPLS with particular emphasis on understanding history, heritage, culture and community dynamics
  • Develop ability to share YWCAMPLS’ compelling story with stakeholders

Team Leadership:

  • Effectively lead, manage, mentor, grow and develop existing Advancement Office Team; recruit, hire and retain where necessary

 

Advancement Goals:

  • Maintain existing charitable giving levels.
  • Pave a path for growth and expanded giving from all sources for Years 2 – 5

 

Strategic Advisor:

  • Serve as an excellent resource to the CEO, Board, executive and senior leadership team (SLT) members
  • Work with the CEO, SLT and Board’s Strategic Planning Committee to determine ST & LT fund development strategy and to develop an integrated fundraising and business plan to address gaps and secure required resources to meet strategic initiatives. Both of these deliverables will be done in collaboration with the SLT and the board

 

RELATIONSHIPS

This position reports to the Chief Executive Officer of the YWCA Minneapolis. The incumbent will interact with the C-Suite team, senior leadership team, direct reports, board members, and committee chairs, YWCA Managers and Directors, and community leaders.

 
Position Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

All candidates must have a passion for the YWCAMPLS mission, demonstrated effectiveness as a leader and excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. In addition, the following is required:

  • 10+ years of progressively responsible nonprofit sector development experience and a track record with demonstrated knowledge all channels of fundraising including individual giving (annual, major gifts, capital campaigns and planned giving); corporate relations; grant development and fundraising eventsLeading high performing teams. The successful candidate will have demonstrated ability in identifying marketplace opportunities, and developing comprehensive marketing plans.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (“Must Haves”):

  • Passion for developing a culture of philanthropy which, includes a commitment to the “Donor Bill of Rights;” understanding and appreciation for trust-based philanthropy and/or community-centric fundraising principles would be a definite plus
  • An understanding of and commitment to developing a culture of philanthropy that is grounded in DEI, racial/gender equity and social justice
  • Ability to cultivate, build and grow strong relationships with corporate and community partners, philanthropic leaders and individual donors
  • Strong understanding of financial management principles including but not limited to: statistics, trend analysis, gift administration and reporting; experience managing complex financial data from various sources (government, foundations, scholarships, etc.) would be a definite plus

  • History of dedicated volunteer activity and/or commitment to nonprofit organizations.
  • Comfort and familiarity with computer systems and databases

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s or other advanced degree, preferred; Baseline certification in fundraising (CFRE)

 

WORK CONDITIONS

  • Must be able to work on a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Travel to various YWCA of Minneapolis sites and event locations in personal vehicle.
  • Occasional lifting of 25 lbs. or more.
  • Requires occasional flexible work hours for implementing and attending certain meetings and events
