We currently have an immediate opportunity for a Full-Time Activities Coordinator to join our EMPOWER After School Program in Wilmington, NC.  If you are looking for a new and rewarding position, we'd love to explore this opportunity further with you. 


The Activities Coordinator is responsible for the planning and implementation of recreational activities as well as assisting in the overall operations of all phases of the program. This position is responsible for ensuring best practices and supports based on the personal outcomes of the individual and/or family. This position has direct supervision of the direct care para-professionals in the absence of the Director.

  • Represents program to parents, participants, potential staff, staff, stakeholders, etc.
  • Plans, implements, and supervises the safe and therapeutic recreation of the program including field trips, scheduled activities, and daily programming.
  • Arranges for all program logistics and appropriate activity planning and implementation.
  • Ensures staff is trained on safety and emergency procedures, as well as how to assess environmental safety.
  • Supports Director with the management of program budgets by ensuring necessary authorizations are in place before supports begin or continue.
  • Coordinates the scheduling of Recreational Paraprofessionals providing supports. Ensures Recreational Paraprofessionals are working appropriately scheduled hours.
  • Anticipates staffing needs and responds to schedule changes, taking the appropriate action to avoid problems.
  • Helps recruit and supervise directly and indirectly all program participants.
  • Helps to develop program publicity and disseminates information.
  • Assists with setting fundraising goals and implementing fundraising activities.
  • Assists with the routine administration of approved medications.
  • Promotes positive team and employee interaction and communication.
  • Assists in maintaining adequate records on all programs.
  • Assists the Director in the overall management of the program as needed.
  • Implements appropriate crisis response for any emergency, i.e. health or medically related, or an environmental emergency.
  • Drives van or company vehicle when needed to transport participants.
  • Assists with the ongoing evaluation of all programming, implementing corrective action as needed to improve operations considering participant needs/interests and with special regard to emerging rehabilitation or therapeutic philosophies as they apply to the program philosophy.
  • Assumes the responsibilities of the Program Director in their absence.
  • Follows and assures compliance with all Easter Seals Policies and Procedures.
  • Must demonstrate Easter Seals valued behaviors of Accountability, Commitment, and Caring as appropriate to the position.
  • Protects the rights of those persons served and supports the right to dignity, humane care, and freedom from abuse, neglect, exploitation, and mistreatment.
  • Ensures completion of required training within prescribed timeframes for self.
  • Performs related duties as requested. 
  • Supervisory Responsibility: This position will supervise Recreational Paraprofessionals and may supervise Administrative Assistant in the absence of the Director.
Position Requirements


  • Bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by an entity approved by USDOE or CHEA in therapeutic recreation (CTRS desirable), recreation, special education, adapted physical education or related field preferred.
  • Licensed Recreation Therapist preferred
  • Two (2) years of administrative or supervisory experience in an inclusive setting is preferred.
  • Must have a valid, unrestricted, state-appropriate driver’s license and personal vehicle insurance.
  • Satisfactory criminal background check and acceptable motor vehicle record.
  • Measurable knowledge, skills and experience in therapeutic programming and personal care assistance with populations of individuals with physical and/or cognitive disabilities.
  • Experience with personnel supervision, interpersonal relationships, discipline, training, and leadership.
  • Experience in organizing recreational activities in group settings.
  • Experience in and ability to train staff in the implementation of recreational activities, personal care, activity adaptations, etc.
  • Ability to observe participant and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures.
  • Ability to supervise and communicate effectively with staff members in order to achieve a beneficial and therapeutic program.
  • Ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to specific activities.
  • Ability to analyze and provide assistance regarding program activity and personnel problem areas.
