Description

JOB SUMMARY

Reports to: Chief Development Officer (CDO)

Supervises: Marketing & Annual Fund Director

Second Harvest has strong brand recognition throughout the county and food banking community. Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, this role is responsible for developing and implementing the Food Bank’s strategic communications and public/media relations plan and strengthening the organizations’ visibility and brand awareness.  The Senior Director is responsible for building the internal processes and external relationships with the organization’s constituencies, including donor, participants and the media. This position places an emphasis on educating the public on the Food Bank’s reach, programming and services.

Strategy, Vision and Leadership

  • Develop and implement an integrated strategic communications plan to advance the Food Bank’s brand identity; broaden awareness of its programs and priorities, and increase the visibility of its programs across key stakeholder audiences.
  • Maintain communication and advertising budget.
  • Lead a team to effectively align messaging with internal stakeholders including staff, volunteers and partner agencies to drive the mission, vision and goals of the Food Bank.
  • Lead the generation of print and online content that engages audience segments and leads to measurable action.
  • Put communications channels in place to create momentum and awareness as well as to test the effectiveness of communications activities.
  • Manage the development, distribution, and maintenance of all print and electronic collateral including, but not limited to, newsletters, brochures, and web.
  • Coordinate webpage maintenance—ensure that new and consistent information (article links, stories, and events) is posted regularly.
  • Track and measure the level of engagement with overall communication channels.

Media Outreach and Public Relations

  • Integrate efforts across all earned and paid media outreach.
  • Prepare media advisories/releases, orchestrate/host local and other media events, manage relationship with traditional media outlets and pitch story ideas that support our strategic mission.
  • Collect, track and archive news articles.
  • Manage media contacts.

Publications and Marketing

  • Coordinate and support organizational publication needs across 2H teams.
  • Oversee the production of all print and digital publications (annual report, research findings, programmatic publications, etc) in partnership with organization staff to include content development, design, production and distribution.
  • Collaborate with 2H staff to tell the story of the food bank, our partners and participants.

Digital Outreach

  • Oversee website development and maintenance including content, functionality, and monitor effectiveness of content through site visitor activity and analytics.
  • Design and execute social media strategy to support goals outlined in communications plan

Management and Leadership

  • Supervise the Marketing & Annual Fund director who supervisors the Digital Marketing Manager; including interviewing, hiring, and training; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and monitoring work; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with people from different racial, ethnic, and cultural groups and from different backgrounds and lifestyles; demonstrating a knowledge of and sensitivity to their needs.
  • Collaborate across department and teams to ensure consistent and appropriate messaging for the organization.

 

 
Position Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training & Experience

A minimum of 8-10 years of combined experience in communications, ideally in an ‘in-house’ leadership role within a complex nonprofit organization, public relations, and marketing for communications.  Supervisory experience with paid staff. A BA/BS degree in communications, marketing, or related field; OR equivalent experience. Successful candidates for this position will have a proven track-record of developing and implementing an effective integrated strategic communications plan.

  • Excellent writing/editing and verbal communication skills
  • A strong track record as an implementer who thrives on managing a variety of key initiatives concurrently
  • Highly collaborative
  • Relationship builder with the flexibility and finesse to work across departments/teams
  • The energy, maturity, and leadership with the ability to serve as a unifying force and to position communications discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels
  • Sincere commitment to work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including staff, board members, volunteers, donors, program participants, and other supporters
  • Self-starter, able to work independently, and entrepreneurial; enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives
  • Ability to serve as an organizational spokesperson
  • Ability to lead the entire range of problem solving work from problem definition to analysis, recommendation, and the development of a solution-oriented implementation plan.
  • Spanish language abilities a plus

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have access to a motor vehicle, as well as valid auto insurance coverage, for occasional driving on the job.
  • Must have valid California Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record, as documented by a current MVR (will be obtained by the Food Bank’s insurance carrier).
  • It is the responsibility of all SHFB personnel to participate in our Food Safety/Food Defense programs.
  • In instances of a federal, state or locally declared emergency, Second Harvest is typically considered an essential service and emergency responder; all of its employees may be called in to perform regular or emergent duties.
