Founded in 1980, the Dance Group performs the repertory of choreographer Mark Morris, hailed as the 'the most successful and influential choreographer alive, and indisputably the most musical' (The New York Times), whose work is acclaimed for its ingenuity, musicality, wit, and humanity. Live music and community engagement are vital components of the Dance Group. It has toured with its own musicians, the MMDG Music Ensemble, since 1996, and regularly collaborates with orchestras and opera companies around the world. In addition to 17 full-time dancers, the organization currently employs 34 full-time staff and 75 part-time staff, teaching artists, and musicians.

In the heart of the Brooklyn Cultural District, the Mark Morris Dance Center, founded in 2001, is the hub of dance and music education in Brooklyn. The nine-studio building provides affordable classes in multiple genres for people of all ages, levels, with and without disabilities, accompanied by live music. The studios, a performance space, a Wellness Center, and ancillary spaces are all available to the community and to nonprofit organizations at subsidized rates. MMDG's Community Education Programs partner with public and private schools and community centers to provide customized classes. MMDG also offers customized dance workshops for persons with Parkinson's disease and their caregivers.

Description

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:
The Mark Morris Dance Group seeks an Adult Programs Director with vision, excellent communication, and inter-personal skills, to join the six-person Education and Community Engagement Department. Reporting to the Director of Education and Community Engagement, the Adult Programs Director leads the planning, design, and implementation of in-person and digital programming, and is responsible for the overall organizational efficiency of the Adult programs at the vibrant, bustling Dance Center and in partnership with community-based organizations focused on adult dance opportunities. With support from the Adult Programs Coordinator, the Adult Programs Director acts as the lead liaison between adult program faculty, adult students, dance rehearsal renters, and the organization, finding points of intersection and cultivating community across the various constituencies.

The Education and Community Engagement Programs reflect the spirit of the Mark Morris Dance Group in its celebration of dance and music. We believe that dance is for anybody and aim to provide excellent dance and music experiences for all ages, levels of experience, with and without disabilities. We offer a diverse range of classes, both in-person and online, and strive to be a center of artistic exploration for children and families, community members and professional dancers.

RESPONSIBILITIES, include but are not limited to:


Strategy
With Director of Education and Community Engagement

  • Develop short and long-term goals and ensure the successful implementation of daily programs
  • Develop long term goals for future digital programming as a new revenue stream for the Adult Programs
  • With the Development Department strategize to identify contributed funding sources related to Adult Programs
  • With the Marketing Department, strategize marketing and communication plan for on-going programming and special events
  • With Finance Department, set revenue goals and analyze financial wellbeing of Adult Program

Personnel Management

  • Oversee and manage hiring and onboarding of adult faculty, staffing of all adult classes, and dissemination of policies and procedures
  • Maintain Adult Program database and teaching artist and musician resource materials (forms and contact lists)
  • Work in tandem with Youth and Family Programs and Dance for PD team members to ensure alignment and consistency in faculty management and communication of policies and procedures
  • Oversee the submission of accurate bi-weekly payroll for Adult Program
  • Oversee department intern when applicable

Programming

Classes, Workshops, & Intensives

  • Create, oversee, and implement year-round adult programming
  • Oversee assessment and evaluation processes as a means to making programmatic decisions
  • Liaise with Operations team to ensure all programs are executed effectively, accurately, and properly
  • Assist Marketing Department with the coordination and dissemination of ongoing communication, schedule changes, and photo and video documentation
  • Assist Development Department with the collection of demographic information on a quarterly and annual basis

Subsidized Rehearsal Space Program (SRSP)

  • Assist in the establishment of goals for the newly designed Subsidized Rehearsal Space Program
  • Assess SRSP program performance, track allocated hours, and provide analysis for reports to funders
  • Process rental requests as needed

Harkness Center Healthy Dancer Initiative

  • In tandem with the Director of Education and Community Engagement, coordinate all activities for the Harkness Center Healthy Dancer Initiative
  • Manage application process, communication with participants and partnering Dance Centers
  • Provide on-going program evaluation and recommendations

Shared Space

  • Oversee Shared Space program
  • Manage applications and communication with applicants
  • Hire guest facilitators and curate showings

Off-Site Programs

  • Manage partnerships for programming with community-based organizations, local businesses, and public spaces
 
Position Requirements

SCHEDULE: 40 hours per week on-site at the Dance Center; Monday-Friday 10am-6pm and occasional weekends or adjusted hours to support specialized programs and/or events.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 5+ years’ experience working in Dance or Arts Education
  • Experience in program management and curriculum development
  • Supervisory experience
  • Experience working with Mindbody, Zendesk, EMS a plus
  • Compliance with MMDG COVID-19 Safety Plan and Vaccination Policy

REQUIRED TRAINING:

  • First Aid Certification + refresher courses offered annually
  • CPR/AED Certification + refresher courses offered annually
  • Dance Center Floor Warden and Fire Guard Safety Training
  • Bystander / De-escalation Training – offered annually
  • COVID-19 related: MMDG COVID19 Safety Plan and Dance Center Health and Safety policies

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

  • Annual Salary: $50,000-$55,000; commensurate with experience
  • Paid vacation, sick/personal leave, holidays and bonus days
