Description

SUMMARY

Prepares bid packages, conceptual estimates, design build proposals, prequalification packages, customer presentations, analysis of subcontractor bids, etc., for projects of various sizes and complexity. Interfaces with Owner, A/E's, and General Contractors to provide engineering and cost data regarding project cost, constructability, and feasibility. Oversee and manage the Estimating Department's objectives, policies/procedures, training, technology, and personnel by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Teaches, trains, and mentors the Estimating team to further develop everyone's potential.
  • Prepares work assignments according to capability to ensure preparation of bids in a timely manner.
  • Review's data to determine material and labor requirements and prepares itemized material labor and equipment take off lists.
  • Compute's cost factors and prepares estimates used for management purposes such as planning, organizing, and scheduling work, preparing bids, selecting vendors or subcontractors, and determining cost effectiveness.
  • Consults with clients, vendors, or other individuals to discuss and formulate estimates and resolve issues.
  • Build rapport with key people within customer accounts.
  • Answers RFPs per Mona guidelines.
  • Maintains and updates estimating database and updates as required.
  • Develops procedures to streamline estimating.
  • Creates a "special" price file for common items not in the database.
  • Maintains estimating log and win ratios.
  • Maintains an organized estimating department/area.
  • Implements procedures to "grow" the department.
  • Leads project transition meetings to field.
  • Works closely with Purchasing on material, equipment, subcontract, and rental costs.
  • Works closely with Project Manager's when required on post win projects.
  • Maintain an organized updating system of estimating program.
  • Develop other estimating abilities through training and development of estimating operational manual.
 
Position Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proficient in creating Working Drawings Estimates, Design Development Estimates, Design Build Estimates, and Conceptual Estimates for the following types of projects:
    • Commercial Projects
    • Industrial Projects
    • Institutional Projects
    • Specialty Projects
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills.
  • Ability to read and thoroughly understand all bid documents.
  • Ability to work independently without supervision as well as effectively as part of a team.
  • Superior Math and Critical Thinking skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of estimating practices and procedures including blueprint reading and analysis, software input and data manipulation, takeoff techniques, and electrical systems and their components.
  • Thorough knowledge of NEC requirements as well as a basic knowledge of the effects of other national codes on electrical construction.
  • Thorough understanding of labor risk factors including but not limited to location, weather, labor availability, installation difficulty, and scheduling.
  • Advanced knowledge of all standard electrical systems in commercial, industrial, and institutional construction projects.
  • Ability to design basic systems with rudimentary information.
  • Thorough knowledge of standard labor units and the logic behind their development.
  • Advanced experience with estimating software (Accubid preferred) including the use of custom designations, bid summaries, item substitutions, special reporting, and job exporting.
  • Experience working with Bluebeam Revu a plus.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly supervises employees in the estimating department.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree (B. S.) from four-year college or university with 5 years’ experience; or a minimum of fifteen (15) years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, and business correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, and customers. Ability to speak, read and write English fluently.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of complex variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Microsoft office, computer estimating experience required. CONEST knowledge preferred. Management experience. Positive outlook with energetic demeanor. Leadership qualities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
