About the Organization Our mission is to improve educational and life outcomes of children in urban schools by preparing culturally competent, effective career teachers who accelerate student achievement and disrupt systems of racial and socioeconomic inequity. Urban Teachers accomplishes this by recruiting outstanding candidates for a unique 4-year commitment. Over this duration, our dedicated faculty and staff equip our aspiring educators with state-of-the-art training, support them in their growth into being full-time teachers, and provide them a master’s degree credential and dual-certification after they have demonstrated effective teaching practices and skills. Our program has received significant recognition in recent years and is quickly becoming a national model for a more rigorous, equitable, and impactful path to becoming a teacher.

Over the last decade, we have recruited, prepared, developed and supported over 1500 novice teachers for Baltimore, Washington, DC and Dallas. After evaluating city and school partners across the country, we are excited to take our lessons learned and flagship model to Philadelphia. Your Role

The Director of Development, Mid-Atlantic Region is a critical and collaborative member of the Urban Teachers Team and reports to the Vice President of Development. You will manage a portfolio of individual, corporate, and institutional constituents to garner support for Urban Teachers’ local program operations in Washington, DC and Baltimore, with the potential to expand this portfolio into new mid-Atlantic markets depending on how work is distributed in future years within an evolving organization-wide program and development strategy.

You will be responsible for meeting an overall annual philanthropic target based on the organization budget, with specific local goals driven by annual market analyses; working closely with regional program site teams to elevate awareness and support of our mission and impact in our markets; and directly co-architecting our organizational pathways to increased sustainability, diversification, and innovative philanthropic partnerships through strategic market analysis and planning and regular collaboration with the broader Development team. You will embody our core values in every aspect of your work, bringing a sharp equity lens and entrepreneurial spirit as our growing nonprofit strives to expand and pivot our development operations and portfolios to better reflect our future opportunities for impact and sustainability.

Target Start Date: January 31, 2021

Location:

COVID-19 Vaccination requirement:

  • All Urban Teachers employees, including those working remotely, must show proof of COVID-19 vaccination. New employees will be required to show proof of vaccination before they begin their role. There will be exemptions for medical or religious reasons (exemptions must be approved by HR).

Your Responsibilities

    • Identify opportunities to increase return on cultivation investment within pipeline and across markets - from new locally-aligned giving vehicles (e.g., events, sponsorships) to local board development and engagement - and partner with local and national leadership as needed to bring them to fruition (note: Baltimore is required to maintain a local advisory board per state regulations, and it is currently co-managed by the Executive Director and Director of Development; however, the incoming Director would have the opportunity to evaluate and act on opportunities for increased strategic alignment with development in collaboration with the team)
  • Plan for, implement, and track pipeline engagement and management throughout the life cycle
    • Manage a portfolio of diverse major accounts and strategic campaign opportunities, in partnership with regional Executive Directors, Development support staff, and national leadership as needed, to efficiently raise and sustain contributed revenue equal to or in excess of annually-determined performance goals
    • Oversee every aspect of the donor life cycle for each account in the portfolio, from qualification of prospects in partnership with our development operations lead, to cultivation preparation and execution, to solicitation in partnership with program leaders and assigned content writers, to gift processing and stewardship
    • Partner with Development team and stakeholders to set and monitor key portfolio performance indicators at in each phase of the donor life cycle, and rigorously maintain donor records in Salesforce to enable accurate reporting and analysis
  • Actively partner to build a high-performing Development function, vibrant culture of philanthropy, and strong base of local, state, and national support for a growing and evolving nonprofit
    • Engage regularly with the broader Development team and key team collaborators through meetings and workflows to track, evaluate, and share pipeline and progress information; surface and collaborate around problems of practice and new opportunities; advance major team-wide projects; and identify and solve for shared resource and service needs across portfolios
    • Embed in regional site teams as an informed and committed partner, regularly attending site team meetings and events, staying abreast of site work and needs, and maintaining strong collaborative relationships with program staff and faculty
    • Identify opportunities within mid-Atlantic markets to garner support for organization-wide priorities and initiatives
    • Serve as an internal and external ambassador for our impact and sustainability work, inspiring others - whether colleagues or fellow external event attendees - to get involved
    • Stay proximate to the broader work of Urban Teachers by regularly engaging in cross-functional collaboration and support opportunities, such as volunteering for aspiring teacher interview days and attending celebratory program events

Position Requirements
  • 5+ years of experience in a similar role, ideally including sustained ownership of a multi-site portfolio emphasizing major institutional, corporate, and individual gifts, as well as mutually supportive collaboration with multiple solicitation partners to engage prospects
    • Robust experience in education sector or sector-adjacent fundraising – preferred
    • Prior knowledge of and/or relationships within Baltimore and/or Washington, DC philanthropic markets - preferred
    • Demonstrated success in directing and assuring the quality of development support work delivered by direct reports or lateral collaborators (prospect research, grantwriting, etc.) - preferred
