Description

SUMMARY

As a Senior Estimator, you will prepare and coordinate electrical estimates for some of the largest and most exciting projects in the industry. Our Senior Estimators play a key role in coordinating estimate take-offs, leading teams on complex projects, and supporting and mentoring estimators.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Review all bid documents to determine the complete project scope.
  • Take overall responsibility for estimates for large, complex projects, and leading a team of estimators with varying abilities to complete the estimate.
  • Train and mentor department employees, as well as review work done by subordinates ensuring estimate completeness and accuracy.
  • Perform a complete review of "front-end" documents recognizing risk factors and reflecting any costs associated with such risks in the estimate. Recognize onerous legal and contractual requirements within the documents, communicating same to those involved in the final estimate review.
  • Compose concise, well structured, comprehensive scope/clarification documents reflecting a high degree of professionalism and project knowledge.
  • Lead estimate reviews in executive review meetings with or without the assistance of a department head.
  • Perform advanced takeoffs and input utilizing the estimating software.
  • Set up an estimate in a format that allows advanced manipulation of the data by the estimator, enabling the generation of complicated estimate breakdowns for bid analysis, scheduling input, and bid form requirements.
  • Layout and take off branch circuit wiring for basic and specialty systems including lighting, lighting controls, instrumentation, receptacles, fire alarm, sound systems, etc.
  • Formulate labor units for unfamiliar materials.
  • Provide the data required to create a man loaded schedule for bid analysis and proposal submittal.
  • Assess the risk associated with takeoffs performed by other members of the team.
  • Develop and price a comprehensive scope of value engineering ideas on any given project. Incorporate other cost saving measures in an estimate that are acceptable within the requirements of the contract documents but not necessarily apparent to all members of the estimating team.
 
Position Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proficient in creating Working Drawings Estimates, Design Development Estimates, Design Build Estimates, and Conceptual Estimates for the following types of projects:
    • Commercial Projects
    • Industrial Projects
    • Institutional Projects
    • Specialty Projects
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills.
  • Ability to read and thoroughly understand all bid documents.
  • Ability to work independently without supervision as well as effectively as part of a team.
  • Superior Math and Critical Thinking skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of estimating practices and procedures including blueprint reading and analysis, software input and data manipulation, takeoff techniques, and electrical systems and their components.
  • Thorough knowledge of NEC requirements as well as a basic knowledge of the effects of other national codes on electrical construction.
  • Thorough understanding of labor risk factors including but not limited to location, weather, labor availability, installation difficulty, and scheduling.
  • Advanced knowledge of all standard electrical systems in commercial, industrial, and institutional construction projects.
  • Ability to design basic systems with rudimentary information.
  • Thorough knowledge of standard labor units and the logic behind their development.
  • Advanced experience with estimating software (Accubid preferred) including the use of custom designations, bid summaries, item substitutions, special reporting, and job exporting.
  • Experience working with Bluebeam Revu a plus.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for training and mentoring Assistant Estimators and Estimators within department.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); minimum of 10 years related electrical experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret proposal documentation, blueprints, general business periodicals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, and business correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, and customers. Ability to speak, read understand and write English fluently.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry, algebra, trigonometry, and the ability to perform electrical calculations. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

COMPUTER SKILLS:

Ability to work with computers, calculator, estimating system, scale rule and electronic scale tool. Must be familiar with Microsoft Office to include Excel, Word, Projects, Outlook, and similar systems.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of complex variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:

Some flexibility in hours is allowed, but the employee must be available during the “core” work hours of 7:00 am to 4:00 pm. Exempt employees are required to meet responsibilities assigned to this position.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.
