Hybrid position, must be located in Iowa. Relocation available. 


The IT Engineer Sr. will work with other Brownells IT engineers and teams to design, implement, maintain and support IT solutions in order to meet the growing business needs. Design solutions-based requirements that support Brownells’ strategic objectives, and address/remediate issues as assigned. The position will require engineering and support of roughly 70% Microsoft Server & Desktop Systems, 20% Security and 10% VoIP systems. This position is a customer facing role and is a great opportunity to work with a diverse breadth of technologies. They should demonstrate innovation, constant learning, and effective team participation. This person should demonstrate a willingness to share knowledge. They should possess excellent communication and listening skills as well as strong analytical and problem-solving skills. The candidate must be able to work effectively under project and daily deadlines.



Position Requirements


  • Execute on Systems Engineering projects as assigned from end-to-end (design, implementation, support)
  • Directs distribution and installation of software/hardware updates and upgrades.
  • Support and maintain Microsoft Active Directory (2008 R2, 2012 and 2012 R2)
  • Design, support and maintain systems and services in a hybrid (on premise /public cloud) environment.
  • Support and maintain Microsoft and Office 365 environments
  • Microsoft Identity and Access management including ADFS, SSO, MFA, Conditional Access
  • Keep abreast of emerging technology and how it could be leveraged at Brownells.
  • Identifies end user behavior patterns and develops strategic solutions to support that behavior.
  • Evaluates current capabilities, prepares needs analysis, investigates options, obtains price quotes, makes recommendations, purchases, installs and maintains enterprise infrastructure.
  • Provides new application ideas to all areas of the company on how new technology can be utilized to gain better efficiency and improve company productivity according to industry best practices.
  • Designs and implements strategic server configurations for application installations.
  • Manages third party partners when appropriate to implement overall strategy for time critical projects.
  • Responsible for backup, recovery and security procedures according to industry best practices.
  • Develops, publishes and enforces enterprise security policies.
  • Develops, manages and publishes enterprise SLA's.
  • Selects and maintains strategic relationship with third-party vendors.
  • Meets with management and end users to recommend enterprise infrastructure solutions to increase efficiencies and to find cost-effective solutions to new and existing software and hardware needs.
  • Provides significant influence in strategy.
  • Displays technical leadership role in support of the infrastructure team members.
  • Provides expert technical assistance and operational frameworks for team members.
  • Answers questions or resolves computer problems for clients in person, via telephone or from remote locations.
  • Designs and delivers group training for recurring problems.
  • Respond to support requests and participate in a 24x7 on-call support rotation and off-hours maintenance windows
  • Approves work of less experienced IT Engineers.
  • Keeps records of maintenance and troubleshooting activities and reports trends.
  • Downloads and evaluates new versions of software/firmware/hardware for infrastructure and makes recommendations based on findings.
  • Monitors infrastructure systems against published SLA.
  • Documents, supports, and carries out the hardware and operating system and software maintenance schedule.
  • Develops and maintains documentation for other team members to perform their roles.
  • Anticipates infrastructure needs for planning and budgeting via monitoring the organization's appropriate usage and the implementation of rotation planning.



Education and Experience

  • Ten years of relevant experience or equivalent education (BA/BS degree and 7 years of relevant experience)
  • BA/BS degree preferred, but not required
  • MSCE certification preferred, but not required

Knowledge & Skills

  • Windows Server, Active Directory, GPO, DNS, DHCP, and other associated server roles.
  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft System Center Suite
  • Demonstrated experience managing large and complex Microsoft environments including Skype for Business, Microsoft Teams, O365 and Azure offerings.
  • Windows Remote Desktop 2008R2/2012R2/2016 environments
  • Third party application installation and management.
  • Working knowledge of Cisco, Dell centric Switches, Firewalls, Routing, Security, LAN/WAN , SIP and VPN technologies.
  • Desired exposure to VoIP PBX server systems, phones and peripherals. Linux CentOS
  • Disaster Recovery, Business Continuity and other applicable data replication services.
  • All Current Windows Desktop Operating Systems and Applications (Office, Adobe, Java, etc.).
  • Desktop peripherals, printers, and other common end user devices (cell phones, tablets, scanners, etc.).
  • PowerShell or other scripting experience required
  • SQL experience preferred

Physical Demands

  • Sedentary work. Sedentary work involves lifting no more than 10 pounds at a time and occasionally lifting or carrying articles like docket files, ledgers, and small tools. Although a sedentary job is defined as one which involves sitting, a certain amount of walking and standing is often necessary in carrying out job duties. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required occasionally and other sedentary criteria are met.
