Peer Support Specialist (ACTT)

Position Summary:

This position is a NC Certified Peer Support Specialist. This professional’s life experience with mental illness or substance abuse and behavioral health services provides expertise that professional training cannot replicate. The certified peer support specialist is a fully integrated team member who provides highly individualized services in the community and promotes the self-determination and shared decision-making abilities of beneficiaries.


Essential Job Functions:

  1. Provides coaching, mentoring, and consultation to the beneficiary to promote recovery, self- advocacy, and self-direction.

  1. Promotes wellness management strategies, which includes delivering manualized interventions (e.g., Wellness Recovery Action Planning or Illness Management and Recovery).

  1. Assists beneficiaries in developing psychiatric advance directives.

  1. Models recovery values, attitudes, beliefs, and personal action to encourage wellness and resilience.

  1. Provides consultation to team members to assist in understanding of recovery and the role of the Peer Support Specialists, promoting a culture in which beneficiaries’ points of view and preferences are recognized, understood, respected, and integrated into treatment.

  1. Serves as an active member of the ACT team, equivalent to other team members, which includes facilitating the Person Centered Planning process for beneficiaries assigned to him or her if a QP.

  1. Supports and empowers the individual to exercise his or her legal rights within the community.

  1. Psychosocial rehabilitative interventions and case coordination.

  1. Make every effort to meet critical standards contained in the most current edition of the National Program Standards for ACT Teams as established by the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill or US Department of Health and Human Services, Center for Mental Health Services.

  1. Prepares and submits documentation accurately and on time.

  1. Participates in peer review.

  1. Ensures incident reports are prepared and submitted on time.

  1. Prepares and presents documentation for utilization review.

  1. Assists in training new employees.

  1. Completes required training within prescribed timeframes.

  1. Successfully participates in the DMH approved ACTT training.

  1. Other duties as assigned.


Position Requirements


Minimum Qualifications:

  1. A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalency required.

  1. Must be a NC Certified Peer Support Specialist

  1. Must be or have been a recipient of mental health services

  1. Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  1. Ability to handle multiple responsibilities and assign priorities.
