Job Summary: Design, implement, and evaluate viticultural experiments under the supervision of the Research Manager. Manage routine data collection and analysis as well as vineyard scouting and monitoring for pests and disease.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Experimentation Planning (30%)
- Design research trials to address current questions and topics in the vineyard.
- Coordinate and plan vineyard trials with the Research Manager with input from the VP Winemaker, Director of Viticulture and Associate Winemaker.
- Conduct research, literature searches, information compilation, and complimentary tasks.
Experimentation Execution/Implementation (30%)
- Coordinate winemaking activities with Research Manager.
Other (30%)
- Manage routine data collection and analysis on production vineyards.
- Scouting vineyards for pest and disease problems.
- Provide technical support for routine vineyard tasks such as pruning, tying, frost control, training, suckering, leafing, thinning, irrigating, harvesting, planting, and other activities as needed.
- Complete special projects as needed.
Research/Continued Education (10%)
- Participation in industry research events (UCD seminars, IQ Conference, Unified Symposium, ASEV, NVG, NVWTG, etc.)
- Keep up to date on current wine grape research.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education and/or Experience
Degree in VE, Biologicals Sciences, or applicable field, and three years experience.
Skills
Must be able to perform quality work, safely and consistently with minimum supervision or direction. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Use proper safety equipment and safety procedures. Able to handle multiple competing tasks and priorities. Have strong verbal communications skills. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional variables. Ability to comprehend the consequences of various problem situations and to refer them to the appropriate people for resolution.

Working Conditions
Work is mainly performed in a vineyard. The individual is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles relative to normal viticultural practices. The individual will frequently be outdoors and exposed to the elements. Noise levels are usually moderate to loud.
Hazards: Occasionally works near moving machinery parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and toxic or caustic chemicals.

- Follow all company policies and procedures including job safety, safety rules and regulations.
- Assist management to provide safe and healthy working conditions at all times.
