Description

POSITION SUMMARY

Responsible for providing nursing care to patients involving standardized procedures requiring knowledge of specific patient conditions and treatments that includes personal care, collection and reporting of vital signs, assisting with procedures, patient charting, and patient teaching under the supervision of Registered Nurses and other medical staff. Assists with patient re-positioning, transporting, dressing/undressing and Activity of Daily Living in accordance with the Nursing Standards of Care and Unit policy. Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Responsible for providing direct observation of patients as directed by the nursing plan of care and under supervision of the nursing staff and/or nursing department supervisor. Responsible for assisting nursing staff to create, maintain and provide a safe environment.
  2. Explains treatments, observes patients, communicates observations or changes in patient’s condition to the appropriate healthcare team members and initiates emergency measures such as basic life.
  3. Shares in the responsibility of the initiation and maintenance of clinical records by charting of vital signs, height and weight; intake and output, observations relative to patients’ condition and reaction to treatment and nursing care given.
  4. Transports patients using a variety of equipment including: wheelchair, stretchers, beds, or other mechanism and assist in patient ambulation.
  5. Assists in preparing a patient for procedures that include draping patient for examinations and treatments and remains with patients. May include performing duties such as holding instruments and adjusting lights.
  6. Handles multiple duties and tasks like changing bed linens, run errands, direct visitors, and answer telephone.
  7. Takes and records temperature, blood pressure, height, weight, pulse and respiration rates, and as directed may collect or transport specimens.
  8. Cleans, sterilizes stores, prepares, and issues dressing packs, treatment trays, and other supplies.
  9. Follows stringent cleanliness regimes as to preclude the possibilities of infections and other diseases.
  10. Practices hand-off communication to the next CNA on shift or to the charge nurse
  11. Ensure proper and safe care of patient valuables and clothing, follows the organization’s policies and procedures.
  12. Maintains positive working relationships with staff and contributes to teamwork within the department. Adheres to TCRHCC mission, goals and policies.
  13. Assists in assembling and maintaining adequate supplies and shares in the responsibility for general upkeep of the department equipment and supplies.
  14. Demonstrates appropriate uses of equipment, materials, and supplies during nursing care of patient.
  15. Attends all mandatory in-services and department meetings as required and scheduled.
  16. Performs other duties as assigned and float to other units.

Additional Duties for Inpatient Units:

  1. Answers call lights or intercom system promptly to determine and assist with patients' needs; reports any abnormal findings or complaints to charge nurse.
  2. Assists patients with meal by direct feeding or bring tray to them and set up.
  3. Turns, repositions, or assist in bathroom/toileting of bedrest patients.
  4. Understand and practice preventive measures of bedsores of all patients.
  5. Initiates recreational activities, such as assisting with outdoor ambulation or deliver reading material to patients.
  6. Responsible for electronic health records data entry pertinent to patient service role
  7. Performs other duties as assigned and float to other units.
  8. Interpret all Telemetry ECG strips every shift

MENTAL AND PHYSICAL EFFORT

Physical

This position is very active and requires prolonged standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing, or pulling and climbing through the day. The employee must frequently lift or move objects and patients weighing up to 100 pounds. Must have the following vision requirements: close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to hear alarms on equipment, clint calls and instructions from physicians or department staff. This position involves repetitive use of both feet, both hands and ability to grasp simple/light as well as firm/heavy and the ability of fine dexterity in both hands. May require long hours and frequent weekend work when working inpatient units.

Mental

Must be able to prioritize and use good judgment. Must be able to coordinate a variety of issues while being frequently interrupted. Must communicate effectively and with tact in stressful situations.

Environmental

The job requires prolonged exposure to fumes or airborne particles and occasional exposure to wet humid conditions, working near moving mechanical parts, toxic or caustic chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, risk of radiation and vibration. The typical noise level for this position is moderate.

 
Position Requirements

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Must have a high school diploma or GED

Certification/Licensure:

The candidates may be CNA, RNA & or LNA

  • Must have and maintain a current, active, and unrestricted Certification as a Nursing Assistant from the State of Arizona
  • Must have and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification by the American Heart Association
  • OB unit requires the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification by the American Academy of Pediatrics. If not already certified, must be obtained within six (6) months of hire.
  • Successful completion of ECG Analysis class

Experience:

  • Must have one year of inpatient CNA experience

Other Skills and Abilities:

A record of satisfactory performance in all prior and current employment as evidenced by positive employment references from previous and current employers. All employment references must address and indicate success in each one of the following areas:

  • Possession of high ethical standards and no history of complaints
  • Reliable and dependable; reports to work as scheduled without excessive absences
  • Able to respond appropriately in stressful situations
  • Able to provide direct patient care in a kind, patient, and compassionate manner
  • Ability to communicate clearly and tactfully with patients and their family
  • Complete Patient Sitter Competency Training (upon hire)
