JOB SUMMARY: Recognize and respond effectively to all emergency situations and customer service needs in the aquatics facility.  Supervise, control, and help maintain the pool area to prevent accidents. Assist swimmers with emergencies and customer service needs to create a welcoming, safe environment for all patrons. The position is under the supervision of Aquatics Coordinator.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Recognize and respond effectively to all emergency situations.
  • Supervise, control and maintain pool area to prevent accidents.
  • Monitor patrons in the pool area for infractions of aquatics safety guidelines and code of conduct.
  • Correct infractions of patrons by informing them of rules and the desired behavior in the pool area through a firm but friendly manner.
  • Perform proper lifeguarding skills and operate lifesaving equipment in an emergency situation.
  • Report major rule violations, emergencies, and customer concerns to supervisor through incident reports and direct communication (if appropriate).
  • Provide information to patrons in regards to aquatics rules, scheduling, and programming.
  • Execute lifeguard maintenance duties to ensure that the Aquatics Area is clean and safe.
  • Assist with customer service needs and/or refer customer to appropriate staff.

 

RELATIONSHIPS:

This position reports to the Aquatics Coordinator who reports to the General Manager. The incumbent will interact with Pool Patrons and Aquatics Class Participants.  Critical relationships will include other Lifeguards, Headguards, Instructors, and Coaches.

 

 
Position Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certification or equivalent
  • Current American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer Certification or the equivalent.
  • Must have functional lifeguarding and rescue skills to effectively respond to emergency situations.

 

Preferred:

  • Able to work at all three YWCA aquatics facilities.
  • Bilingual language in Spanish, Somali, Hmong or Arabic - receive a $1 differential pay increase

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Must be able to swim 300 yards using front crawl and breaststroke.
  • Must be able to swim 25 yards, surface dive to a depth of at least 9 feet, retrieve a 10-pound diving brick, and return to the starting position still holding the brick in 100 seconds or less.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to work in indoor pool environment – warm and humid.

 

COMPENSATION: Starting at $15.25 per hour
