Description

POSITION SUMMARY

Biomedical Equipment Technicians (BMET) are responsible, under moderate supervision, to install, inspect, repair, maintain medical equipment and all clinical support systems relating to healthcare intervention. As a BMET, you may be responsible for the calibration, modification, and adaptation of a wide variety of medical equipment. Equipment might be as complicated as an x-ray machine or defibrillator or as essential as an adjustable hospital patient bed. As a BMET, you'll often perform your duties around patients due to a medical device providing continuous health care. Will be required to keep accurate records on repairs and various maintenance steps performed, utilizing our asset management platform. Work schedules may consist of evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays; may also be subject to call-back after-hours.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Assist with repairs, installation, inspections, preventative maintenance, calibrate all medical equipment and clinical support systems, including life-support equipment.
  2. Assist with preventative maintenance and electrical safety testing all medical equipment and clinical support systems, including life-support equipment.
  3. Responsible for maintaining and entering all new equipment data into our asset management platform, i.e., equipment data, document uploads, logging of all parts, repair cost for work orders, including service agreements.
  4. Maintains biomedical equipment supplies inventory by verifying stock, anticipating needs, placing, and expediting orders, verifying receiving for the finance department.
  5. Assist BMED Lead Technician and Project Coordinator with technical assistance and instruction to personnel regarding equipment operation and maintenance.
  6. Review outcome of preventive maintenance actions; make recommendations to departments concerning improvements.
  7. Discussing and solving problems with manufacturing, quality, purchasing, and marketing departments; contact medical equipment service suppliers to resolve issues with equipment operations; arrange for repair and parts replacement.
  8. Communicate recommendations to replace obsolete equipment and comply with equipment standardization practices.
  9. Keep up to date with new medical equipment developments on a national and international level. Participate in educational opportunities, such as reading technical publications, attending original equipment manufacturer webinars, and maintaining a professional network with all vendors.
  10. Assist with and evaluate third-party repairs.
  11. Assist the BMET's and manager with new and existing medical equipment in-service on proper techniques, such as cleaning, care, and education to department staff.
  12. Ensure proper PPE is always worn while on duty including but not limited to, face mask, gloves, gown, isolation gown, NIOSH-approved N95 filtering facepiece respirator or higher, if available), and eye or face shield.
  13. Complete all donning and doffing tasks in a safe acceptable method and discard of used PPE accordingly. (see CDC website for most current updates)
  14. Complete task training for all routine cleaning and decontamination processes for all surfaces contaminated by a communicable disease to ensure a high level of patient, visitor, employee and external customer satisfaction.
  15. Perform related duties as assigned.

Physical:

This position requires the prolonged ability to stand, walk, sit, talk or hear, use hands to finger, handle or feel, push/pull, stoop, kneel, bend, crouch or crawl, reach with hands and arms and taste or smell. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds of equipment for a prolonged period of time and occasionally up to 100 pounds. Vision requirements are the following: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Applicant must be able to hear alarms on equipment, client calls and instructions from physicians and department staff. Position involves prolonged repetitive movements of both hands as well as prolonged simple/light grasping and extended periods of repetitive use of both foot, firm/heavy grasping and fine dexterity. 

Mental:

Must be able to prioritize; use good judgment; and ability to analyze, repair and test electronics and electromechanical equipment.

Environmental:

Work is performed in an interior medical/clinical environment and may involve exposure to hazards or physical risks which require following basic safety precautions as well as working near moving mechanical parts for a prolonged period of time.  Possible hazards include exposure to electrical shock, ionizing radiation, chemicals and chemical fumes, high-pressure air, infectious disease, and various other hazards associated with biomedical engineering work. May be exposed to wet, humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions, extreme heat or extreme cold intermittently.  Protective clothing and safe work practices required. The typical noise level for this position is moderate.

 
Position Requirements

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Technician I:

  • High School Diploma or GED

Technician II:

  • Associate Degree in electronics or biomedical equipment technology or an equivalent combination of education or three (3) years work-related experience may be substituted for an associate degree.

Experience:

Technician I:

  • Must have a minimum of three (3) months of work-related experience in an electronics fieldwork environment, where execution of fundamentals of engineering methods, applications, and techniques executed to analyze, troubleshoot, modify, repair, install, and evaluate electronics systems

Technician II:

  • A minimum of three (3) years of work-related experience in repairing and maintaining medical equipment.

Other Skills and Abilities:

A record of satisfactory performance in all prior and current employment as evidenced by positive employment references from previous and current employers. All employment references must address and indicate success in each of the following areas:

  • Positive working relationships with others
  • Possession of high ethical standards and no history of complaints
  • Reliable and dependable; reports to work as scheduled without excessive absences.
  • The fundamental knowledge of medical and clinical support equipment to repair, calibrate, and perform preventative maintenance.
  • Knowledge and effectiveness of medical equipment and clinical system interoperability.
  • Knowledge of current regulatory requirements and color code conventions used in component, and wiring marking
  • Knowledge of interpreting schematic and wire diagrams.
  • Knowledge of the basic anatomy and physiology applied to the use of biomedical equipment.
  • Must have current valid State driver's license
