Primary Responsibility: The Recreation Generalist provides overall team support and general expertise in all functions of the Parks and Recreation department. Position will be tasked with a variety of responsibilities with in general operations of guest services, and may include class instructor, sports official, lifeguard, youth camp leader, events, general maintenance and janitorial duties. Responsible for any operational duty in the department that role is assigned to. Will be responsible for contributing in a team environment that helps people stay active, learn new skills, and have fun. Position is trained and has knowledge in all areas of Community Center.

Examples of Duties for Success:

The duties listed below are representative of, but do not necessarily include, all the duties and responsibilities that an individual in this position may be called upon to perform.

  • Ability to perform a variety of Parks & Recreations duties. Such as fitness or pottery instructor, youth camp leader, lifeguard, guest services representative and general maintenance or janitor.
  • Displays ability to change direction quickly with professionalism and calmness.
  • Required to provide team support and coverage when needed.
  • Attend trainings, and maintain all required certifications and qualifications for lifeguarding, youth camp and/or fitness instruction.
  • Assists the need to post new class information, cancellations, and changes on the website, social media, etc.
  • With attention to detail, ensures that residency is verified and correct guest registration information is collected.
  • Handles cancellation, refund and registration transfer requests.
  • Balances cash drawer, prepares deposits and delivers deposits to the Treasurer’s Office. Oversees the review and correction of deposits; ensures verification of treasurer receipts.
  • Communicates openly and effectively with supervisors, co-workers, staff, participants, parents, volunteers, contractors, and other community members.
  • Schedules general facility rentals and reservations; to include the multi-purpose room, gymnasium, lounge, swimming pools, barn and outdoor arena functions. Responsibilities to include, but not limited to; receiving reservations, customer relations, payments, staff scheduling, room set-ups, room take-down, etc.
  • Assists with the daily building upkeep, maintenance, room set-ups, and communicates maintenance needs with the Facilities Maintenance Department and cleaning company.
  • Assists the ordering and inventory of all front desk office supplies and other supplies as needed.
  • Opens and closes facility, and performs and schedules regular building checks/walk-throughs to ensure safety and cleanliness.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director - Parks and Recreation and any duties needed to stabilize an emergency situation.

 

Qualifications for Success:

  • Technical Knowledge:
    • Ability to work with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher and Adobe including InDesign with the ability to learn new software programs. Basic knowledge of HTML a plus.
    • Proficiency with MS Office Suite required.
    • Knowledge with website design is preferred.

 

  • Ability to:
    • Establish and maintain courteous and effective working relationships with employees, the public and other agencies.
    • Coordinate projects for maximum efficiency and monitor progress towards desired objectives.
    • Demonstrate self-motivation in resolving issues without awaiting a directive.
    • Strong interpersonal, analytical, verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate and interact with all levels of the organization.
    • Understand, interpret and communicate policies, procedures, code of conduct and protocols.
    • Be flexible and adaptable, with ability to adjust direction when needed. Strong learning agility.
    • Enjoys and excels in an environment where he/she must proactively take on new responsibilities and challenges while incorporating new ideas.
    • Obtain Colorado State Childcare License Leader qualifications.
 
Position Requirements

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in recreation management, exercise science, business administration, public administration, or closely related field.

Experience:

  • Two or more years working in recreation field.
  • Previous customer service experience and experience using a cash register preferred.

Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required abilities, knowledge and skills as determined by Gilpin County may be substituted for the requirements above.

Certifications:

  • Obtain CPR/AED Certification within 90 days of employment.
  • Must possess FEMA IS100 and IS700a within six months of employment.
  • Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s license without any restriction due to driving record. Must also be able to drive a county vehicle.
  • Certifications in American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, First Aid, and CPR for the Professional Rescuer or equivalent training is preferred.

Mental/Physical Demands:

  • Perform a wide variety of physical tasks such as bending, stooping, standing, walking, and climbing stairs.
  • Lift and carry materials and custodial equipment weighing up to 50 pounds; in excess of 50 pounds with assistance.
  • May come into contact with human fluids and waste (i.e., blood, sputum, urine).
  • Work with hazardous materials such as solvents and chemicals.
  • Work in inclement weather.
  • Work around dust, dirt, noise, and odors.

Hours: Schedule may vary to cover shifts during hours of operation. Evenings and weekends may be required as needed.
