Turning Point Community Programs is hiring a Peer Support Specialist for our Providence Center in Grass Valley. GENERAL PURPOSE

Under the administrative supervision of the Team Leader or Program Director, this position is responsible for providing psychosocial, rehabilitation and recovery-oriented services for adults.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is an at-will direct service position within a program. The Peer Specialist will participate in outreach and engagement efforts and offer personal experience to assist with relationship building and linkage to treatment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES – (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

  • Locate available housing, negotiate with landlords, and assist members with rental applications and interpreting lease/rental agreements, while developing and maintaining positive relationships with local area landlords/property managers
  • Develop, maintain, and update housing resource directory as needed
  • Advocate for members in all areas of treatment, including mental health, substance use, and help them apply for and receive services and benefits from other agencies that will support independent living.
  • Attend all staff meetings, in-services, and trainings as offered and/or assigned by the agency and/or county/community partners unless approval for non-attendance is secured by the Program Director
  • Collaborate, coordinate, and communicate with all involved staff/agencies regarding member’s treatment and progress
  • Provides member support and transportation using personal vehicle to appointments as needed
  • Promptly documents all services provided in member’s chart per agency/county guidelines ensuring to follow Medi-Cal documentation standards when applicable
  • Provides prompt intervention in the event of a crisis both to stop the crisis and to notify, when indicated, persons and agencies necessary for the resolution of the crisis
  • Provides “on-the-spot” counseling that is both helpful to the members and consistent with the philosophy of the program
  • Ensures the safety, health, and well-being of members
  • Is personally responsible and held accountable for work hours and time management to ensure delivery of service to members and task completion
  • Adheres to and upholds the policies and procedures of Turning Point Community Programs.
  • Meets the standards set for performance in all aspects of job duties.
  • Meets the standard for consistent attendance (not more than a 5% absence rate per month) by reporting to every scheduled shift on time and ready to work and by the judicious use of paid sick leave and avoiding any situations resulting in the need to dock pay for time not worked.

  • Principles and goals of community mental health
  • Principles and goals of the “self-help model”
  • Principles and goals of the “consumer-driven model”
  • Principles and goals of the “harm reduction model”
  • Principles, techniques and trends in counseling, psychotherapy, clinical case management, and various treatment modalities
  • Psychosocial rehabilitation’s treatment and programming

Ability To:

  • Work and communicate with staff, members, families, community agencies and professionals
  • Perform crisis intervention strategies
  • Work effectively under stress and conflict
  • Exercise appropriate judgment and decision-making
  • Be flexible and adaptable in any given situation 
  • Work as a member of a team.
  • Work under time deadlines and pressures
  • Work with minimal supervision

Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES

Education, Training and Experience:

A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is through graduation from High School or obtainment of a GED and two (2) years full time/equivalent (FTE) direct care experience in a behavioral health related field providing direct care services; and a certificate of completion form the Core Skills Training after hire. Associate of Arts Degree Preferred.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:

  • California driver’s license & current vehicle insurance/registration if driving; and,
  • Reliable means of transportation capable of passing vehicle safety inspection if more than five years old excluding all modes of two-wheeled transport inclusive of bicycles, mopeds and motorcycles
