Mechatronics Engineer

The Mechatronics Engineer is a key contributor to new product development at Zepher. The person in this role utilizes the principles of computer, electrical, and mechanical engineering – along with systems integration and technical project management skills – to research, design, develop, test, and troubleshoot computer-controlled electromechanical systems. The Mechatronics Engineer supports senior technical personnel and project managers in the understanding, planning, and execution of complex electromechanical projects.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop innovative solutions and perform design work requiring engineering knowledge and skills.
  • Evaluate technical data packages for completeness and manufacturability.
  • Research and create proof of concepts and contribute to and/or manage technical prototype development.
  • Research and estimate costs – material, labor, tooling, and others – to finalize and build prototype low-rate production products.
  • Contribute to and/or manage product design projects with accountability for meeting all parameters including cost, schedule, and performance targets.
  • Apply advanced understanding of manufacturing processes to ensure designs are technically and commercially viable and can be reliably manufactured within cost targets.
  • Contribute to advancement of the product development process.
  • Develop two dimensional drawings and design specification documentation, establish test plan/procedures, and develop and deliver design review packages.
  • Perform and monitor tests, document outcomes and confirm design requirements.
  • Troubleshoot and/or conduct root cause analysis of identified deficiencies. Retest and perform final acceptance actions. Assess/analyze operational events. Investigate equipment failures and diagnoses faulty operation. Make design and/or procedural changes or recommendations.
  • Review product design for compliance with company standards, customer contract requirements, and related specifications.
  • Maintain all documents pertaining to project. This includes work instructions, drawings, contracts, risk management plans, special instructions and any other production documents used to complete a project or required by the customer.
  • Monitor all activities pertaining to the completeness and current revision levels of production documents and implementing change control and configuration management procedures.
  • Coordinate activities concerned with technical developments, scheduling, and resolving engineering design and test problems.
  • Prepare technical status reports and lead technical discussions at project review sessions with various stakeholders.
  • Submit metrics and progress reports to supervisors and stakeholders as required.
  • Maintain an understanding of the current status of all project deliverables and timelines.
  • Complete training on relevant quality procedures and understands his/her contribution to the achievement of company quality objectives.

Position Requirements


  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
  • Ideal candidate will have experience and interest in wire harness design/build, robotics (motors, encoders, drivers, etc.), electronics debugging and associated tools (multimeters, oscilloscopes, Wireshark, etc.).
  • Ideal candidate will have experience and interest in common electronics protocols (uart, I2C, CAN, etc.) and connector types (RJ-45, USB, D-sub, etc.).
  • Basic software coding experience, if only at a scripting level.
  • 2 or more years of experience in related engineering and product development.
  • Aerospace and defense industry experience preferred.
  • Understanding of ISO9001 Quality Standards and requirements. AS9100 preferred.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills, along with the ability to communicate effectively and maintain credibility with customers, suppliers, and across all levels in the business.
  • Superior problem solving and analytical skills; demonstrated passion for solving problems and operational excellence.
  • Strong writing, organizational and communication skills.
  • High level of proficiency with technology; including Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), ERP/MRP systems (Epicor, preferred) in a manufacturing environment.
  • Working knowledge of ECAD/MCAD software systems (SolidWorks [MCAD] preferred).
  • Able to travel, work, and communicate with stakeholders as needed during non-standard and unscheduled hours.
  • Physical activities can include standing, walking, lifting, pushing or carrying heavy objects, sitting for long periods of time, keyboarding, other computer and desk work, auto and plane travel.
