Position Summary: Under the direction of the senior directors of the organizing & field services department, the deputy director of charter school organizing will be responsible, in collaboration with the regional directors, for developing and overseeing union organizing campaigns in the charter school industry.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Target, develop strategy and supervise campaign organizers.
  • Work with affiliates on developing organizing programs including but not limited to assessing organizing opportunities, generating leads, recruiting and training affiliate staff.
  • Expand organizing capacity and union presence in charter schools.
  • Provide strategic and tactical consultation to affiliates around individual campaigns, establish organizing projects and develop project budgets.
  • Work with the AFT Union Leadership Institute to develop and conduct training and staff development programs for charter school organizers.

 

 

 
Position Requirements
  • Demonstrated success in developing, conducting, and managing a broad range of private sector union organizing campaigns including campaigns conducted in a variety of settings and among various occupations.
  • Successful applicant should possess exceptional strategic and tactical expertise.
  • Expert knowledge of NLRB rules and procedures.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and conducting training programs for organizers and knowledge of the charter school industry.
  • An in-depth knowledge and experience in the use of polling, focus groups, surveys, professional issues, literature, videos, and media, as well as strong personnel management skills, are desirable.
  • Experience working for a national union with state and local affiliates is a plus as is a broad knowledge of AFT.
  • Experience with diverse labor organizations and non-traditional organizing methods is desirable.

Work Environment The work requires extensive out-of-town-travel.
