Description

JOB SUMMARY: An Associate in this position may provide direct patient care for adult and/or geriatric patients through the Cardiac Rehabilitation Services department. Evaluation and treatment as well as documentation of patient progress is required as well as the ability to communicate with patients, family, physicians and hospital associates. In addition, the associate must adhere to established organizational and departmental policies and safety guidelines and possess problem solving abilities, excellent customer service skills and Patient First characteristics. The associate must assist in maintaining a safe working environment throughout the facility.

QUALIFICATIONS:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The associate must have the ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • They must demonstrate the knowledge and technical skill necessary for providing competent, comprehensive patient care as well as display behavior which promotes good guest relations to patients, visitors, physicians and co-workers.
  • They must be able to communicate and comprehend the English language and possess keyboarding skills for computer documentation.
  • The exercise specialist is responsible for the evaluation and treatment of outpatients as well as the development of a rehabilitation program that meets the parameters of the referring physician.
  • They may administer limited medications, as per protocol, after completion of competency validation.
  • The exercise specialist must be able to teach/instruct patients, families and colleagues.
  • The associate is responsible for accurate documentation that meets state, federal and facility guidelines as well as participation in departmental meetings/activities.
  • They require knowledge of the healthcare system work environment and the role of the exercise specialist in the 'health care team'

EXPECTED BEHAVIORS:

  • Conducts interactions with patients, visitors, physicians, volunteers, other associates and the public in a manner consistent with the intent of the hospital's mission, vision, and values.
  • Documents initial evaluation and each day of treatment in patient record in a timely manner and completes summary of patient's progress at discharge.
  • Initiates and maintains a current care plan which identifies the care and teaching to be given based on the patient's stated goals and needs.
  • Instructs patients in exercise, demonstrating correct body mechanics/positioning and provides education to the patient regarding proper usage of equipment (seat height, RPM, tension, breathing techniques, etc.).
  • Teaches self-care concepts for appropriate exercise and pulse taking, dietary modifications, smoking cessation, weight control, and prescribed medications.
  • Educates patients concerning how to maximize quality of life within the limits of their physical capabilities and family members concerning how to best assist patients in the rehabilitation process.
  • Reads current literature and publications concerning Cardiac Rehab/health care.
  • Participates in departmental performance/quality improvement and program development as well as in hospital events such as Heartbeats, Heart Walk, etc.
  • Promotes the Cardiac Rehab department through ongoing marketing within the medical community and the community at large.
  • Follows Patients First Behavioral Commitment, AIDET, and customer service training.
 
Position Requirements

LICENSURE/CREDENTIAL REQUIREMENTS: Appropriate licensure for clinical profession.

ADDITIONAL EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: The exercise specialist must be a graduate of an accredited school with at least a Bachelor's in Exercise Science or Exercise Physiology or an Associate's degree in Nursing with at least 1 year of cardiovascular experience. Mandatory Continuing Education: Customer Service, Fire and Safety, Corporate Compliance (including Confidentiality), Infection Control, and education required by regulatory, accreditation bodies, scope of practice, and/or Hancock Regional Hospital.
