1. Basic Purpose:
A transportation manager ensures that shipments into or out of an organization are handled quickly, safely, and within budget constraints. This might include oversight of transportation equipment and personnel operated by an internal or external organization.
This position will coordinate with outside companies that provide freight services. Familiarity with shipment options, legal issues, government regulations, and safety procedures is required, as is knowledge of geography, mathematics, and computer applications.
This position reports to the VP of Transportation and Operations Initiatives.
2. Principal Activities and Results
Managing and leading the Transportation Coordinators in the daily trip planning, monitoring, and execution of the plans to exceed the customer's performance expectations.
Partner with Internal or External Fulfillment Partners on quality and Customer Experience metrics, including the root cause analysis of problem areas
Negotiate competitive freight rates with hired haulers. Ensure select carriers are responding to the daily customer service requirements and are operating within established budget guidelines and contractual agreements.
Review and research new and existing transportation vendors; programs to reduce, replace and improve upon transportation costs
Monitors effectiveness of daily routing activities to ensure all established key performance indicators (KPI) and Sales/customer satisfaction goals are met.
Ensures Delivery Associate compliance with local, state and federal regulatory agencies (i.e. DOT, OSHA, etc.) and ensures that electronic logs are kept current and accurate.
Accountable for shipping budget and costing budget versus actual. This would include all trailers and equipment, sub-contractors, shuttles, permits, fees, etc.
P&L reporting to VP Transportation and Chief Logistics Officer
Effectively maintaining communication with internal and external business partners
Provide methodology for freight quotations to the customer service and sales team for hauling, freight, trailer costs, etc
