Job Summary

The Payroll Manager is responsible for developing and controlling all tasks necessary to accomplish the organization’s payroll processing objectives. These objectives include the oversight of timely and accurate processing of payroll, related tax reporting, benefit-records administration, and payroll systems maintenance. The Payroll Manager is responsible for the day-to-day supervision and development of a Payroll Clerk. Responsibilities also include providing timely reports on payroll processing activities to executive management.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the payroll disbursement process for 300+ full-time and 2,000+ seasonal employees.
  • Responsible for the accurate execution of payroll for all Major and Minor league players.
  • Determine that all player signings, performance, and other award bonuses are accurately taxed and allocated to states/cities as applicable.
  • Coordinate with the Payroll Clerk to ensure that all payroll-related remittances are accurate and paid in a timely manner.
  • Ensures accurate and timely processing of payroll updates including new hires, terminations, and changes to pay rates.
  • Oversees the preparation of a variety of payroll-related documents for the purpose of documenting payroll activities and issues, meeting compliance requirements, and providing audit support.
  • Oversee the audit process for payroll reporting for staff and players at the Pirates’ Dominican Academy.
  • Researches discrepancies of payroll information and/or documentation for the purpose of ensuring accuracy and adherence to procedures prior to processing.
  • Verifies a variety of payroll-related information (timesheets, direct deposits, wage attachments, benefits, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring accurate distribution of funds and payroll.
  • Responsible for reviewing the periodic tax filings with federal, state, and local authorities to ensure accuracy and timeliness of payroll tax payments.
  • Review fringe benefits to determine their taxable impact on employees.
  • Assist in the audits of the Club’s 401(k) and workers comp plans and the annual testing of the pension plan.
  • Works with the accounting department to ensure the accuracy of the recording of the payroll accounting entries to the general ledger.
  • Maintains a wide variety of payroll information, files, and records in written electronic formats for the purpose of providing an up-to-date reference and audit trail for compliance.
  • Ensures accuracy of data flow between HRIS, timekeeping, and payroll systems.
  • Communicates with a variety of internal and external parties (city/state/federal agencies, player agents, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring accurate processing of payroll deductions/garnishments.
  • Maintains relationships with local and international third-party payroll service providers.
  • Remains current on all payroll-related rules and regulations.
  • Provides day-to-day leadership, oversight, and development, of Payroll Clerk.
  • Other duties as assigned by Sr. Director, Finance & Accounting.
 
Position Requirements

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university; and five to seven years related accounting and payroll experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Proficient in processing payrolls for multiple jurisdictions
  • Proficient in using payroll-related software related to the processing of payroll
  • Well-versed in understanding the taxable impact of fringe benefits to employees
  • Computer experience with spreadsheets and word-processing programs, with an emphasis in Microsoft Excel and Word

Desired:

  • Professional payroll-related certification preferred
  • Experience in working with a major league sports team with a strong preference for a Major League Baseball Team
  • Fluency in Spanish
