Supervising Archivist, Graphic Arts 

Description

Reporting to the Associate Director, Graphic Arts Collections, the Supervising Archivist, Graphic Arts coordinates and supervises incoming production art collections for the Margaret Herrick Library, including both analog drawings and digital files of primarily production and costume design drawings, animation cels and backgrounds and other graphic works. You will oversee library professionals, specialists and interns; coordinate the ingest of digital assets with the Academy’s Digital Management Services (DMS); support the department and library through participation at academic conferences; and serve on a variety of library committees and working groups.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee collection and acquisition transactions and implement cataloging policies and priorities for production art collections.
  • Participate in the hiring, training, supervision, and performance management of production art cataloging staff and interns.
  • Analyze metadata and standards for the department to identify gaps and issues and propose projects to remedy them.
  • Catalog both analog and digital artworks.
  • Supervise production art digitization projects.
  • Work with the Associate Director, Graphic Arts Collections to develop processes for managing the department’s growing digital profile.
  • Prioritize metadata cleanup projects related to the department’s data and liaises with (DMS) to develop data clean-up strategies.
  • Actively participate in the library’s metadata working group and other committees as a representative of the department among the library’s cataloging community.
  • Chair the library’s born-digital working group, drawing on experience working with both two-dimensional works on paper created primarily during the 20th century as well as the materials used in their creation, and knowledge of the tools and formats used in the creation of born-digital files.
  • Work with the library’s conservation and registration staff to facilitate loans of production art (both analog and digital).
  • Identify and advise the Associate Director on long-term storage needs.
  • Participate in library tours and public programming.
 
Position Requirements
  • BA in film studies and MLIS or equivalent degree in an archival studies program.
  • Demonstrated interest in the history of film and the current industry.
  • 3+ years Library or archives experience, preferably in a special collections environment.
  • Knowledge of art and print processes with practice handling fragile materials.
  • Familiarity with preservation techniques and condition assessment of paper objects.
  • Proficiency in applying digital file standards, especially related to advertising and concept art.
  • Expert cataloging skills for both analog and digital files.
  • Must be skilled in the creation and evaluation of workflows and related documentation.
  • Prior experience training and/or managing staff.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to speak comfortably in public to student and VIP tour groups. Bilingual a plus.
  • Must be self-motivated with ability to work independently.
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues in small and large groups to find efficient, practical solutions to identified issues.
  • Must be organized with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to lift and move moderately heavy boxes (up to 20 lbs.) and other objects to and from high and low shelves and drawers.
