DESCRIPTION: This position works under the supervision of legal staff to support legal services and programs for a community-based nonprofit legal aid office serving a diverse community. This position reports to the Watsonville Law Center Legal Director. The ideal candidate has a passion for serving the community, experience in a professional office or law office, and a desire to work as a part of a highly productive professional team.

LOCATION: Watsonville Law Center, Watsonville, CA 95076

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duties related to client services:

  • Under attorney supervision, provides support services to Watsonville Law Center (WLC) clients including interviewing clients, screening for services, reviewing client files with advising attorneys, delivering advice and services, drafting documents and related duties.
  • Communicates with and screens individuals seeking WLC services.
  • Maintains complete and accurate client records.
  • Assists WLC legal staff in maintaining high quality services of staff and volunteers.
  • Maintains strict compliance with office procedures and rules of professional conduct.

Duties related to support of programs:

  • Learns and presents program-related educational materials to individuals and small groups.
  • Coordinates presentations, services, and service events with WLC staff and community partners.
  • Coordinates referrals for legal services from partner agencies.
  • Assists in the preparation of program reports, including tracking and reporting on the outcomes of WLC services.
  • Works as a team with staff and volunteers to ensure compliance with office processes and ensures high quality work product.

Performs other duties as assigned.

 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Four-year college degree and at least one year of relevant experience in a professional office environment or equivalent work experience as a legal assistant.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English and Spanish, including basic business writing.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and experience working with low-income, multi-cultural, immigrant communities.
  • Excellent organizational skills, and ability to monitor accuracy and quality of work.
  • Experience using word-processing, spreadsheets, email, and calendaring and other office software. Experience with databases or electronic case management system is preferred.
  • Typing is required, preferred 40 wpm or better.
  • Valid CA driver license.
  • Ability to travel to various locations in Santa Cruz, Monterey and San Benito counties.
  • Availability for occasional evening and weekend work.
  • Commitment to the mission, values and goals of equal access to justice.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Standing, walking, sitting, typing, reaching, bending, moving and/or lifting up to 25 pounds.
