Schedule Monday-Friday, during the hours of 8:00 am-4:00 pm. Schedule may vary based on departmental needs. Maximum of 15 hours per week.  
Pay Rate $15.00/hr.  
Description

SUMMARY
Assists Forestry Management on the ongoing urban canopy expansion for Venues Parks & Arts. Works and observes in different aspects of the Forestry department. Personal contact will be with staff and the public.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This list represents the types of duties required by the position. Other duties may be assigned as reasonably expected.
• Assists Arborist in daily operations as needed.
• Performs Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data collection to map current tree canopy.
• Uses knowledge to assist in identifying future urban nursery locations on vacant lots.
• Compiles research to generate implementation steps to assist the City of South Bend to reach its commitment of becoming carbon neutral by 2050.
• Assists in creating a long-term planting and canopy improvement plan for the City.
• Creates advocacy and education documents to assist in increasing community engagement through outreach and education.
• Attends divisional and departmental staff meetings, as requested.
• Networks with professionals in multiple fields and the local community.

Position Requirements

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
• Current undergraduate or graduate student in good standing interested in learning on the job training relating to the fields of forestry, sustainability, agriculture, natural sciences, urban management, or a related field.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES PREFERRED
• Knowledge of or can readily learn various software applications.
• Ability to communicate effectively and work with patrons of all ages.
• Ability to understand and carry out instructions.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
• Valid Driver’s required.

EQUIPMENT
Desktop/laptop computer; mobile devices (i.e. iPad, tablet, smartphone); telephone; safety equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed outside as well as in an office setting, with moderate inside temperatures. Outside temperatures vary with weather. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate in the office and varies in the field. Entire office and all city vehicles are smoke-free.
