Head of Education, Vice President  

Description

The VP/GM of Education based in the Washington, DC office will be responsible for all aspects of the business from product and operations to audience and revenue, including P&L management. The Education franchise includes Best Colleges, Best Graduate Schools, Best High Schools, Best Online Programs and Best Global Universities.

The successful candidate must be a proven leader with fast paced entrepreneurial skills and willingness to roll up their sleeves to rapidly grow the business. They must have experience organizing a coordinated effort across content and technology teams, sales and business partners to capitalize on maximizing the audience and revenue. Thinking like and entrepreneur on a daily basis is key to success.

Specific responsibilities include:

Strategy and performance

  • Create business objectives, plans and forecasts for the Education vertical that align with overall U.S. News goals. Gain buy-in by presenting business plans to management, refining where needed. Create clear goals and objectives by category for all teams.
  • The VP/GM will be held accountable for performance on revenue and contribution goals - ownership of P&Ls. They will lead the team to deliver on the strategy and will dig into the day to day where required to drive results.
  • Play an active role in the education industry - become the in-house expert on the education space. Understand and monitor competitor's strengths and weaknesses.

Traffic, product and content

  • Work with product team to ensure the product plan aligns with overall strategy. Ensure resources are being maximized and output is reflecting forecasted results.
  • Play an active role with the content teams to ensure editorial and product content are supporting the needs of the vertical.
  • Help maximize SEO tactics to support the U.S. News brand as a leader in the education space.
  • Develop a multi-year plan to use user insights to customize the onsite experience and maximize the value the audience across all revenue streams.

Partnership management and business development

  • Manage and grow existing partners and associated revenue. Ensure U.S. News is maximizing their value and brand appropriately.
  • Seek out new revenue and traffic generation opportunities. Develop business cases to support the opportunities and present to executive management.
  • Recommend new partnerships and work with Legal, Finance and other stakeholders to negotiate favorable terms.
  • Test and optimize partner integrations to improve results.
  • Rely heavily on analytics and data to make decisions across the business. Constantly be measuring and optimizing.
 
Position Requirements

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience successfully building and leading digital businesses. Must be able to think strategically while being detail and execution-oriented.
  • Strong leader attributes and developer of talent are a must. Create an environment where employees are inspired and able to do their best work. Maximize the right output.
  • Skilled in developing business strategies and promoting those internally to gather buy in. Experience working with and presenting to executive management.
  • Deep hunger for, and experience with, in-depth analytics and problem solving used to drive decisions, paired with a constant need to always be testing and optimizing to exceed goals.
  • Preferably experience in the education space, but not required.
  • Experience with lead generation.
  • A proven track record of working with different business units across a company while bringing teams together for a common vision and goals.
  • Ability to understand and support the value and quality of a brand, but comfortable in challenging the business at all levels.
  • A need to win attitude, but have fun doing so.
