Job Summary

Under direct supervision, performs manual and clerical duties in the library according to defined procedures; shelves and retrieves library materials; and performs related work as required.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Sorts and shelves books and other library materials using appropriate filing system.
  • Ensures library materials are correctly arranged on shelf by shelf reading for accuracy; straighten materials on shelves to make sure they are neat; re-shelving materials as needed.
  • Assists in preparation of displays.
  • Keeps library in good order.
  • Supports the relationship between the library staff and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with patrons and library staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and library information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

Education and Experience:

  • Currently attending a public/private High School; AND one or more years of relevant library experience is preferred; OR the equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential duties.

Required Knowledge of:

  • Practices of public libraries, including basic library principles, procedures, and philosophy of service.
  • Alphabetical and decimal numeric filing systems.

Required Skills in:

  • Accuracy and thoroughness with filing, materials placement and following procedural steps.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with coworkers and other individuals in contact with during work.
  • Ability to accept delegation and work under general direction with or without close supervision.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing and possessing strong active listening skills.


Physical Demands/Work Environment:

  • Must be able to bend, move and lift objects up to 35 pounds.
