Film Education Specialist

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures furthers the understanding, celebration, and preservation of cinema through inclusive and accessible exhibitions, screenings, programs, initiatives, and collections. Welcoming visitors from Los Angeles and around the world, the Museum works in active partnership with motion picture artists and specialists, scholars, staff, and diverse communities to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives around cinema, inspiring discourse, connection, joy, and discovery.

Reporting to the Senior Director of Education and Public Engagement, the Film Education Specialist will develop and implement workshops in collaboration with the Manager, Youth Programs. In recording and amplifying the stories of its participants, these workshops will provide a safe learning space to share stories and develop skills using professional-grade filmmaking technology.

You Will:

  • Author curriculum that teaches young people how to use film as a medium of self-expression and storytelling.
  • Promote positive self-esteem and healing to young individuals facing challenges in the Los Angeles community.
  • Lead the facilitation of the program with support from Teaching Artists, contractors, and other guest artists.
  • Lead a collaborative process of co-creating with numerous stakeholders and constituents.
  • Work towards strengthening our museum’s relationship with service providers in our city.
  • Ensure wide accessibility for programs via accommodations and inclusive teaching practices.
 
Position Requirements

You Have:

  • A Master’s Degree or equivalent work experience in education, filmmaking, social work, non-profit leadership, or related profession.
  • 5+ years of experience working with youth in a practice that aims to foster socio-emotional development, growth, and skill-building.
  • Experience working in a collaborative, inclusive, and culturally competent environment.
  • Experience leading a group of individuals.
  • Experience authoring curriculum that includes lofty goals, evaluative measurements of success, learner-centered approaches, and tactics.
  • Flexibility in schedule to accommodate evening and weekend programs.
  • A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
