Description

The Pirates WHY

The Pittsburgh Pirates are a storied franchise in Major League Baseball who are reinventing themselves on every level; known for:

  • purposefully developing a player and people centered culture;
  • deeply connecting with our fans, partners, and colleagues;
  • passionately creating lifetime memories for generations of families and friends; and
  • meaningfully impacting our communities and the game of baseball.

These are carried out through Passion, Innovation, Respect, Accountability, Teamwork, Empath and Service.

The Role

The Pirates Creative Lab is looking for an experienced content leader and hands on creator to join our growing team and help us build a storytelling narrative that transcends sports or baseball in general. Our focus is to tell the stories of our past, present and future in ways that connect on an emotional level with our fanbase and future fanbase, using unbridled creativity, risk taking, and forward-thinking techniques and skillsets. The Director, Story & Production will be a trusted leader of the Story and Production department for the Pirates; growing, teaching and working alongside a team of producers, designers, mograph artists, social strategists and creative directors to make the best work of their lives. Reporting to the VP, Creative & Content, this role will be integral in the strategic planning and execution of the content pillars for the organization and must have a working and high-level knowledge of storyline and storyboard development, production techniques, shooting on all levels of professional video equipment, audio and sound design, motion graphics, and how all of those pieces work together to build amazing and powerful stories. A strong understanding of current social and media trends that will engage a younger audience is also a must.

Why You?

You are both a teacher and a student at the same time. You are a constant learner who can show us multiple pieces of work spanning multiple genres that will either give us goosebumps, make us wipe our eyes and pretend we aren’t crying, or have us ROFLOL. If you can make us do all three with one piece, you are something special. You are a fan of the sport but are a bigger fan of the story. You lead with integrity and empathy and are more excited when someone who works for you gives you the reaction above that you gave us, and you are quick to let them know what a great job they did and even where they can improve on the next one. You find harmony between your work and personal life, knowing when it’s time to focus, and when it’s time to focus on yourself. What excites you most about your craft and skillset is the ability to create an emotional reaction with a single piece of content on any platform, that will cause people to care about it and share it instantly, creating those network effects to give our brand story a reach beyond just our ballpark.

Job Responsibilities

  • Research, create and deliver non-traditional video content that tells the story of the Pirates organization, our community, our fans and our future here and all over the country and DR
  • Take a brief from anywhere in the organization and transform it into a living document that your team can build great content from
  • Provide and accept real and constructive feedback when necessary
  • Work directly with leadership to ensure KPI’s and goals are obtained personally and for the brand
  • Work alongside the VP, Creative & Content, Art Director and Director, Stadium Presentation to push each other's daily thoughts and execution
  • Direct commercial spots, follow docs, long and short form content and one-off social hits to be used to build the Pirates content ecosystem further
  • Concept, build and constantly optimize the Pirates content ecosystem to ensure its success despite the play on the field
  • Oversee a team of producers, editors, videographers and motion graphic artists who will ideate, produce and create the most exciting and emotive content for the organization
  • Ideate new branded content ideas to pitch to partners who are involved in wanting to make great, authentic work together vs simply adding a logo to a video or graphic
  • Constantly monitor trends in social, podcasting and supporting media around it, becoming a student of the game and a leader in the space
  • Pitch in on asset creation, editing and storytelling as the needs arises
