Assistant or Associate General Counsel

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures furthers the understanding, celebration, and preservation of cinema through inclusive and accessible exhibitions, screenings, programs, initiatives, and collections. Welcoming visitors from Los Angeles and around the world, the Museum works in active partnership with motion picture artists and specialists, scholars, staff, and diverse communities to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives around cinema, inspiring discourse, connection, joy, and discovery.

Reporting to the COO and General Counsel you will provide general legal advice and support to the museum team on a range of matters, which may include general operations and administration, nonprofit governance, ethics, fundraising, sponsorship, acquisitions, employment, litigation, land use, insurance, intellectual property, and tax.

 

You Will:

  • Advise museum departments and leadership on all aspects of day-to-day legal, policy, and ethical issues.
  • Under the supervision of the COO and General Counsel, draft, review, and negotiate contracts covering the range of museum activities, including procuring goods and services, capital projects, special events, intellectual property and licensing, film and public programming, gifts, pledges, exhibitions, technology and software, publications, employment/human resources, development, tax, trusts and estates, and special projects.
  • Assess the legal risks involved in contracts, operations, and programming.
  • Work with COO and General Counsel and senior management in establishing, implementing, and updating museum policies and procedures to ensure they remain compliant with legal requirements and good governance practices.
  • Consult, coordinate with, and help supervise outside counsel as needed.

 

 
Position Requirements

You Have:

  • Juris Doctor degree from a US accredited law school.
  • California license to practice law or ability to become licensed in California.
  • 4+ years legal experience at a law firm or in-house.
  • Knowledge of legal principles, practices, and proceedings and of laws, regulations, and rules related to the institution.
  • Skill in legal research, writing, and analysis.
  • Experience using computers and applicable software.
  • Complex problem-solving experience using good judgment to identify the best course of action.
