Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory (SHC) is a Lasallian Vincentian Catholic, co-educational college preparatory secondary school located in the heart of San Francisco, California. We provide academically rigorous, vibrant learning grounded in social justice and student centered pedagogy. Our entire community is committed to cultivating each student's unique talents and passions, providing myriad opportunities for students to discern and realize their individual intellectual, artistic, athletic, social, and spiritual potential. SHC is a San Francisco Archdiocesan High School that is cosponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, District of San Francisco New Orleans and the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, Province of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.

Description

Position Summary
This is a 4/5th (80% FTE), benefits-eligible position, teaching preparatory and honors Chemistry. There are additional opportunities at the school for full time employment.

 

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Model for students the characteristics of a Lasallian/Vincentian educator;

  • Support SHC’s mission, philosophy and integrated student outcomes;

  • Facilitate student formulation and investigation of questions about the physical world through a variety of discovery labs, shared inquiry, individual research, and scientific data creation and analysis;

  • In collaboration with Science Department colleagues and per the department goals (listed at https://www.shcp.edu/academics/category/science-department):

    • Design and implement standards-based lessons to facilitate critical thinking and mastery of essential skills and understandings as determined by the Chemistry learning team;

    • Plan and implement what students will learn, how they will learn, and how they will be assessed in a manner appropriate to the grade level;

    • Provide regular and varied assessments of student learning to compile accurate grades and properly determine what and how all students are learning;

  • Maintain an interactive learning environment, in both physical and virtual learning spaces;

  • Communicate proactively and consistently with students, parents, and school personnel;

  • Keep current and complete electronic grading and attendance records;

  • Work with the Academic Resource Specialist and/or counselors to accommodate students who have learning differences;

  • Participate in the cocurricular life of the school.

 
Position Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in life or physical science;

  • Teaching credential or work toward it; single-subject teaching credential in Science preferred;

  • Experience working with high school students;

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively to promote student learning.


Desired Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Science;

  • Experience in a Catholic high school setting;

  • Experience as a classroom Physics or Chemistry teacher preferred.
