The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures furthers the understanding, celebration, and preservation of cinema through inclusive and accessible exhibitions, screenings, programs, initiatives, and collections. Welcoming visitors from Los Angeles and around the world, the Museum works in active partnership with motion picture artists and specialists, scholars, staff, and diverse communities to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives around cinema, inspiring discourse, connection, joy, and discovery.

Reporting to the Vice President of Building Operations, the Director leads a team of security personnel providing staffing 24/7 for a dynamic museum, with  high volume theaters and an active events and public programs calendar.  You will  be the visionary leader of the department responsible for implementing best practices in a public-facing institution focused on thoughtful and respectful engagement with a diverse audience.

You Will:

  • Foster an environment of collaboration that encourages all members of the department to feel connected to the museum’s mission and values. 
  • Lead the security strategy for high profile museum events for the international film community.
  • Supervise, train, and mentor the security management team and provide leadership to museum staff in security and safety.
  • Partner with collection teams to audit and develop best practices to ensure the safety of  collections and loaned objects.
  • Oversee development and implementation of emergency preparedness, response programs, safety protocols for security and safefy.
  • Manage onsite executive protection and VIP visits.
  • Provide a high level of integrated threat analysis and advise senior leadership on best practices.
  • Assess and improve existing processes while staying abreast of security procedures.
  • Manage contract security vendors.
  • Oversee maintenance of complex electronic security systems.
  • Develop the security team structure and oversee hiring and training of security personnel. 
  • Develop and manage the annual security budget, including repair and staffing vendor services, supplies, equipment, and uniforms.
  • Direct training for museum personnel periodically conducting annual drills in compliance with applicable laws.
  • Assure the purchasing, distribution, and maintenance of emergency supplies.
 
Position Requirements

You Have:

  • 10+ years of security experience with at least 5 years in a leadership position.
  • College degree strongly desired. High School graduate, or GED required.
  • Experience leading change, developing processes, implementing procedures, and working collaboratively across organizations to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Committement to diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills; ability to use data and metrics to deliver insights and drive action.
  • Understanding of how to scope prospective engagements, evaluate pricing, develop proposals and project plans.
  • Extensive experience overseeing complex electronic security systems.
  • Experience with budgeting and purchasing related to security.
  • Working knowledge of laws and regulations related to security operations in public facilities in California.
