The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures furthers the understanding, celebration, and preservation of cinema through inclusive and accessible exhibitions, screenings, programs, initiatives, and collections. Welcoming visitors from Los Angeles and around the world, the Museum works in active partnership with motion picture artists and specialists, scholars, staff, and diverse communities to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives around cinema, inspiring discourse, connection, joy, and discovery.

Reporting to the Vice President of Building Operations, the Director of Safety and Security will lead the security management team, provide 24/7 staffing, and manage the department’s electronic resources (access control, cameras, radios, etc.). You will lead the task force in developing and implementing emergency preparation and response programs. In emergencies, you will oversee the emergency response and coordinate with first responders and neighboring institutions.

You Will:

  • Oversee safety protocols and procedures for security and safety.
  • Provide a high level of integrated threat analysis and advise senior leadership on best practices.
  • Gather credible threat intelligence and risks to the museum and directly support risk-based decision-making and develop mitigation or resolution strategies.
  • Influence and improve existing processes through innovation and operational change, staying abreast crowd control procedures, and arranging for third-party supplemental security.
  • Supervise, train, and mentor the security management team.
  • Provide leadership to museum staff in security and safety.
  • Oversee safety and security programs, develop and implement procedures, obtain necessary permits for the operation of the department, and maintain security systems.
  • Develop the security team structure and oversee hiring and training of security personnel.
  • Oversee the maintenance of the security control room assuring repairs of security systems, including the access control, cameras, house radios, and public safety BDA systems.
  • Develop and manage the annual security budget, including vendor services, supplies, equipment, and uniforms.
  • Partner with the registrar team to audit and develop best practices to ensure the safety of collections and loaned objects.
  • Coordinate with outside government agencies, including city and county departments, law enforcement, the fire department to ensure appropriate support and response.
  • Liaise with neighboring and regional museums to share knowledge and develop a network of cooperation and mutual support.
  • Oversee development and implementation of emergency preparedness and response programs.
  • Direct training for museum personnel periodically conducting annual drills in compliance with applicable laws.
  • Assure the purchasing, distribution, and maintenance of emergency supplies.
  • Scope prospective engagements, evaluate pricing, develop proposals, and project plans.
 
Position Requirements

You Have:

  • A college degree preferred. High school degree or GED required.
  • 10+ years of security experience with 5+ years in a leadership position.
  • Experience using data and metrics to deliver insights and drive action.
  • Experience leading change, developing processes, implementing procedures, and working collaboratively across organizations to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Project management, planning, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Experience overseeing complex electronic security systems.
  • Experience with budgeting and purchasing related to security.
  • Working knowledge of laws and regulations related to security operations in public facilities in California.
  • Competency applying Cal-OSHA regulations, fire department regulations, and other health and safety regulations.
  • A certification in Physical Security Professional (PSP).
  • A certification from ASIS preferred.
