This position works in a team environment and is responsible for the routine clinical, surgical, preventive, diagnostic, and emergency medical care to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of the zoo’s animal residents.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
- Work with the animal care staff and veterinary team to implement a preventative medicine program that includes quarantine, routine exams, disease monitoring, parasite control, vaccinations, tuberculin testing, dental prophylaxis, and periodic nutrition reviews.
- Diagnose illness and injury in collection animals and provide appropriate treatment and therapies.
- Collaborate with colleagues and local veterinary and medical specialists on clinical cases as needed.
- Participate in dialogue with area curators and supervisors about animal care, welfare, nutrition, breeding, husbandry, and housing.
- Perform gross necropsies and collect samples for histopathology, prepare necropsy reports, analyze findings, and formulate recommendations for preventive measures.
- Prepareand maintain required records, ensuring accuracy and professionalism.
- Support AZA conservation programs and other research efforts by collecting samples and by gathering and submitting data as appropriate.
- May conduct or participate in research projects into the husbandry, breeding, welfare, behavior, or conservation of both captive and wild populations of animals.
- Participate in maintaining standards and regulations of AZA, AAZV, USDA, OSHA, and other regulatory agencies and associations as they apply to zoological institutions and veterinary programs/facilities.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal laws and regulations related to animal care, transport, treatment, and the handling of controlled substances.
- Participate in AAZV and other professional organizations and forums; remain current on continuing education requirements.
- Prepare reports and presentations for publication or delivery at both professional and public forums.
- Teach and mentor visiting veterinary students, technicians, and interns as needed.
- Interact with zoo guests, members, donors, the media, and internal and external clients; considerable interpersonal skills and focus on the guest experience are required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) degree from an accredited School of Veterinary Medicine and three (3) or more years’ exotic animal medicine experience, preferably in a zoological facility.
- License to practice veterinary medicine in Washington State or obtained within three (3) months of hire.
- DEA license to use Class 2 narcotics or obtained within three (3) months of hire.
- USDA category II accreditation to certify health for interstate and international transport of animals.
- Valid Washington State Driver’s License.
- Membership in the AZA and AAZV at a professional level.
- Ability to complete annual TB testing.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office products (Word, Outlook, Excel) and in depth experience with MedARKS.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents.
- Ability to respond effectively to sensitive inquires or complaints.
- Ability to adapt communication based on audience and purpose with inclusivity.
- Ability to work effectively within diverse teams and environments, as well as individually.
- Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
- Ability to work weekends, holidays, and occasional after-hour assignments.
PREFFERED SKILLS
- ACZM Board Certified or Board Eligible.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Lifting animals is one of the most physically taxing aspects.
- Ability to make coordinated gross motor movements in response to changing external stimuli within moderately demanding tolerances.
- This position must frequently lift and/or move up to 30 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
- This position may assume awkward positions for long periods of time.
- This position requires extensive standing, walking, and sitting, use of hands, reaching, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.
- This position relies heavily on all senses every day to evaluate patients. Touch is important for physical examinations, taking blood samples, and performing surgical procedures and giving medicine. Sight is important for evaluating patients at a distance, examining animals for lesions, performing surgery and post mortem examinations, microscope work, and darting. Hearing is important for communicating with co-workers, visitors, and patients, and listing for heartbeats and breathing. Smell is important for identifying some diseases, infections, body fluids, medications, etc.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to variable weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
