Assistant Manager of Theater Operations

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures furthers the understanding, celebration, and preservation of cinema through inclusive and accessible exhibitions, screenings, programs, and collections. Welcoming visitors from Los Angeles and around the world, the Museum works in active partnership with motion picture artists and specialists, scholars, staff, and diverse communities to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives around cinema, inspiring discourse, connection, joy, and discovery.

Reporting to the Manager of Theater Operations, the Assistant Manager of Theater Operations will oversee all non-projection aspects of the David Geffen Theater and Ted Mann Theater. You will supervise, guide, and direct the Academy Museum theater staff for the successful operation of various film screenings and events.

This is a temporary, full-time position through June 30, 2022. 

You Will:

  • Collaborate with the Manager of Theater Operations to hire, train, and develop a high-performing theater staff.
  • Supervise day-to-day theater operations, ensure proper floor coverage, manage breaks, oversee timesheets, and complete annual staff reviews.
  • Coach and provide feedback, conduct individual check-ins, and facilitate corrective action conversations.
  • Handle theater experience challenges, concerns, comments, and complaints escalated from the floor staff level, including any seating, ticketing, or admissions issues.
  • Communicate effectively with all levels of museum management, in-house projection staff, museum technical staff, guest event managers and engineers.
  • Inform theater staff of new information relating to events, policies, procedures, or visitor issues.
  • Lead daily team huddles to ensure a successful run-of-show for all screenings and events.
  • Facilitate AV elements for various events such as operating house lightning schemes, distributing microphones for speaking events, and introducing films.
  • Ensure team compliance with legal policies and procedures.
  • Act as a liaison between administrative staff and floor staff.
  • Monitor and maintain theater accessibility supplies and equipment.
  • Uphold the Academy standard for program excellence.
 
Position Requirements

You Have:

  • At least a High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D).
  • 3+ years of venue management experience in a customer-facing role.
  • Demonstrated success in hiring and managing full- and part-time staff.
  • Knowledge of admissions, Mobile POS, and online ticketing systems.
  • A proven track record of motivating staff and fostering a positive work environment.
  • Knowledge of film, picture aspect ratios, and sound reproduction techniques preferred.
  • Museum or cultural attraction experience preferred.
  • A strong sense of showmanship.
  • A commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion.
  • Availability to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
