Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory (SHC) is a Lasallian Vincentian Catholic, co-educational college preparatory secondary school located in the heart of San Francisco, California. We provide academically rigorous, vibrant learning grounded in social justice and student centered pedagogy. Our entire community is committed to cultivating each student's unique talents and passions, providing myriad opportunities for students to discern and realize their individual intellectual, artistic, athletic, social, and spiritual potential. SHC is a San Francisco Archdiocesan High School that is cosponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, District of San Francisco New Orleans and the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, Province of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.

Description

Position Summary:

We seek a Religious Studies teacher with a strong background in theology and pedagogy to teach a range of Religious Studies courses. Our Religious Studies curriculum integrates the U.S. Bishops Framework in developmentally appropriate ways, reflecting the Lasallian practice of serving as older sisters and brothers in faith. Our Religious Studies faculty engage our diverse student body through student-centered learning, critical thinking, spiritual self-reflection and growth, and our vibrant co-curricular and service programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Model the characteristics of a Catholic, Lasallian/Vincentian educator;

  • Actively support SHC's mission, philosophy and Integral Student Outcomes;

  • Collaboratively and independently design and/or implement curriculum that effectively promote department outcomes and adhere to the scope and sequence as determined by teachers of the same course;

  • Plan what students will learn, how they will learn, and how they will be assessed within a backwards design framework that features common assignments and assessments appropriate to the grade level within the academic discipline;

  • Engage students in an active, effective learning environment, in both physical and digital spaces;

  • Collaborate with peers to develop, review, and improve curriculum;

  • Provide regular and varied assessments of student learning to compile appropriate grades and properly determine what and how all students are learning;

  • Communicate consistently and in a timely manner with students, parents, and school personnel;

  • Demonstrate a commitment to professional learning, including sharing best practices in faith formation, pedagogy, and educational technology;

  • Work with the Director of Studies, the Academic Resource Specialist and/or counselors to support students who have learning differences;

  • Keep current and complete grading and attendance records;

  • Supervise students outside of the classroom in collaboration with the Deans’ Office;

  • Actively support the co-curricular programs of the school community.

 
Position Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in theology or related subject;

  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently to promote student learning;

  • Be a practicing Catholic.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience as a classroom teacher;

  • Teaching credential, catechist certificate, or graduate degree in theology or related subject, or work toward one;

  • Experience working with high school students;

  • Experience in a Catholic high school setting.

Certifications and/or Licensure
None

Education and/or Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree; Master's Degree in theology preferred.

Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft software applications, Google Suite; databases (such as a learning management system) and internet usage.
