Position Requirements

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Requires a high school diploma supplemented by two (2) years of experience in lifeguarding, teaching swimming lessons or water fitness; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Must possess and maintain the following certifications: Lifeguard, CPR, First Aid, and AED.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate visual cues or signals. Some tasks require that ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.

Description

General Description

This classification teaches swimming lessons, water fitness and other aquatics related classes to City residents.

Duties and Responsibilities

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.

 

  • Ensures compliance with all applicable codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures: ensures adherence to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.

 

  • Instructs swimming lessons: prepares lesson plans; registers program participants; takes attendance; teaches and demonstrates a variety of skills, such as floating, kicking, stroke techniques and water safety; tests participants; makes recommendations for future classes and skill development; monitors the safety of participants during classes

 

  • Instructs water exercise classes including arthritis and aerobics: prepares lesson plans and fitness routines; registers program participants; takes attendance; teaches and demonstrates a variety of exercises; monitors the safety of participants during classes.

 

  • Observes and oversees the activities of swimmers: scans the water; enforces pool rules; maintains discipline at facility; takes preventive safety actions; performs and completes safety checks; rescues distressed swimmers; provides emergency first aid and CPR; performs other emergency life-saving services as needed.

 

  • Conducts customer service functions: provides information to individuals regarding pool policies, procedures, programs, fees and other issues; responds to questions/complaints and initiates problem resolution.

 

  • Maintains swimming pool and facility: monitors, regulates, and records pool chemical levels; monitors and regulates temperature of pool water; vacuums and skims pool; cleans deck areas, restrooms, locker rooms, walkways, and pool furniture; stocks paper goods; maintains related documentation.
  • Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable policies and procedures: maintains an awareness of new methods, equipment, and trends in the profession; participates in continuing education and in-service activities; attends meetings, in-service, and training sessions as appropriate.

 

  • Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes and per established procedures: receives and reviews various documentation, including service reports, chemical testing logs, class rosters, and incident reports; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate; prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, and other documentation, including chemical testing logs, flyers, and incident reports; compiles data for further processing or for use in preparation of department reports; and maintains computerized and/or hardcopy records.

 

Additional Functions

  • Depending on area of assignment, incumbents may assist with swim team, track and field team, summer camps, other fitness classes, and special events.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
