Peer Support Specialist

Description

Position Summary:

Peer Support Specialists provide direct support to adults through supportive, face to face therapeutic interventions designed to enhance personal skill development and interdependence. These services are provided in multiple locations, including the home and community of the person served, within the context of Community Support Team.

Essential Job Functions:

• Serves as an active member of the CST, participates in team meetings, and provides input into

the person-centered planning process

• Guides and encourages recipients to take responsibility for and actively participate in their own

recovery

• Assists the individual with self-determination and decision-making

• Models recovery values, attitudes, beliefs, and personal action to encourage wellness and

resilience

• Teaches and promotes self-advocacy to the individual

• Supports and empowers the individual to exercise his or her legal rights within the community

Supervisory Responsibility:

There are no supervisory responsibilities to this position.

Non-Essential Job Functions:

Linkage to additional services and arranging for referrals;

Attends regular group or individual supervision as required;

Participates in ongoing Quality Improvement activities;

Provides high quality customer service, serving as a positive representative for the agency.

Minimum Qualifications:

Persons in this position must:

Be a Certified Peer Support Specialist;

Have one year documented experience with the population served;

Demonstrate high moral and ethical character, and be free of any substantiated charges of abuse or neglect on the NC Healthcare Registry;

Maintain valid insurance for personal vehicles utilized for work;

Complete within 90 days trainings as required by agency and service model.

Equipment Used:

Standard office equipment: computer, fax, phone, pager. Use of personal transportation.

Essential physical requirements:

Must possess the visual acuity to develop written correspondence and determine accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned.

Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of talking, hearing, sitting for long periods of time and performing repetitive motions, such as using a computer.

Must be able to speak audibly, write legibly and perform repetitive motions such as typing.

Environment:

Services are provided in a variety of environments, including the home and community of the person served, with a minimum of 75% of staff time spent outside of agency offices/facilities. Services may be provided in any location.

Position Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
1. A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalency required from an approved, accredited institution.
2. Must be a NC Certified Peer Support Specialist.
3. “Lived experience” and a personal recovery story specific to primary mental illness or substance use disorders.
4. Have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully provide TST to adults with mental illness and substance use disorders
5. Minimum of two years’ experience working with the Adult Mental Health population.
6. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
7. Ability to handle multiple responsibilities and assign priorities.
8. Must have current, unrestricted, state-appropriate driver’s license.
9. Must have current, unrestricted vehicle insurance and provide own transportation for use in fulfilling job requirements.
