JOB SUMMARY
Reports to: Warehouse Manager
Supervises: Sort Room volunteers
The Sort Room Coordinator oversees the work and training of a large and diverse group of volunteers in a warehouse setting. The SRC coordinates daily food sorts: including providing an orientation how to sort donated food, providing safety training, and excellent customer service to the volunteers who come each day to support the food bank.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Customer Service
Develop and maintain effective working relationships and deal tactfully, cooperatively and effectively with staff members, volunteers, agencies, community organizations, growers, packers, processors, and potential donors.
Communicate effectively and respectfully with people from different racial, ethnic and cultural groups and from different backgrounds and lifestyles; demonstrates knowledge of and sensitivity to their needs.
Leadership
Coordinate and supervise the training and daily work of volunteers, court referrals and trainees.
Collaborate with warehouse, agency relations, and development staff to ensure the smooth functioning of daily sort activities.
Warehouse Operations
Move a variety of foodstuff and related material in and about the warehouse for the purpose of inspection/sorting.
Safely drive a forklift in a warehouse setting.
Model for volunteers and assist in packaging of FFC bags, UDSA bags, some FFFF bags and EPP boxes.
Ultimately responsible for the barcoding of all items in the warehouse.
Sign off and distribute EPP boxes; monitor the bread and produce distribution to volunteers while making sure all criteria are met and all paperwork is complete.
Maintain safe food handling practices.
Maintain safe warehouse practices.
Assist in the distribution of commodities (including USDA and TEFAP items).
Maintain the Sort Room and produce area in a clean and orderly condition.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Strong customer service experience, any experience managing volunteers a plus. Two years of warehousing or inventory experience. Any experience in safe food handling, storage, and transport.
Knowledge/Skills/Ability
Knowledge of safe food handling requirements for transport and storage.
Knowledge of produce and ability to determine quality and estimate edibility.
Some knowledge of inventory control practices, procedures and recordkeeping methods.
Ability to work as a part of a team, to foster teamwork and to provide excellent service to coworkers and customers.
Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with people of various ages, educational, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds.
Must have a minimal ability to use computers.
Basic math skills.
Bilingual in English/Spanish is desirable.
Physical Requirements
Able to repeatedly lift bulky items weighing as much as 50 pounds.
Able to see and read documents.
Able to hear normal conversations in person and on the phone.
Able to work in a cold environment.
Bi-manual dexterity.
Requires standing throughout the day.
