POSITION SUMMARY
Patient Transporter’s functions include positioning, transferring, and transporting patients to and from various departments or locations by wheelchair, bed, or gurney. This involves lifting, turning, and repositioning patients requiring moderate to total assistance. Transporter may also perform teaching and training functions, dispatching functions, and limited clerical duties for the transport function. Other role requirements include supply delivery, equipment movement and maintenance and cleaning or disinfection, assisting with the department dispatcher as required, assisting in the management of decedent affairs, and other activities as directed. Assignments may vary between day and night shift, and participation in weekend coverage is required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Transport patients by assisting patients in and out of transport cars, ambulances, helicopters; lifting patients on and off beds; moving them to and from special service and treatment areas, and operating rooms; using wheelchairs or moveable beds.
- Comfort patients and their families offering support and encouragement; being punctual and attentive to procedures schedules; demonstrating caring and cultural sensitivity.
- Reports changes in the patient to others for follow up.
- Cares for patients by assisting them to restrooms, providing bedpans, blankets, etc.
- Removes soiled linen and replenishes clean linen.
- Attends holding areas as requested.
- Assists patients and family members by responding to inquiries and providing information based on departmental and organizational policy.
- Performs related duties such as reporting equipment malfunctions, assisting others, cleans work areas, and transportation equipment, etc.
- Demonstrates standard of performance (ownership teamwork, communication, compassion) that support patient satisfaction and principles of service excellence.
- Transport equipment and supplies by picking-up specimens and delivering to specified laboratory.
- Transports deceased patients by following protocols and delivering them to the mortuary.
- Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures; complying with federal regulations and Joint Commission requirements.

- Customer service, customer focus, bedside manner, physical fitness, verbal communication, listening, documentation skills, decision making, patient services, health promotion and maintenance.
- Ensure proper PPE is worn at all times while on duty including but not limited to, face mask, gloves, gown, isolation gown, NIOSH-approved N95 filtering facepiece respirator or higher, if available), and eye or face shield.
- Complete all donning and doffing tasks in a safe acceptable method and discard of used PPE accordingly. (see CDC website for most current updates)
- Complete task training for all routine cleaning and decontamination processes for all surfaces contaminated by a communicable disease to ensure a high level of patient, visitor, employee and external customer satisfaction.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
PROBLEM SOLVING
The transporter receives work assignments that involve coordination with doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals to transport patients/items safely to different locations in the hospital through good communication, time management, and self-direction.
MENTAL AND PHYSICAL EFFORT

Physical:
This position is very active and requires strength to help lift patients or move objects and patients weighing over 50 pounds. Must be able to frequently lift 10-25 pounds with the ability to lift, push or pull up to and over 50 pounds. A transporter must have the stamina to be on their feet all day. They must be able to work prolong periods standing; walking; sitting; talking or hearing; using hands to finger, handle or feel; push/pull; reach with hands and arms; taste and smell. Must be able to frequently bend, knee, stoop, crouch, or crawl. This position requires the ability to read, write, communicate in verbal and written form. It also requires the ability of close, distance, peripheral, depth, and adjust to focus vision as needed. This position requires prolonged repetitive actions and movement of both hands; grasping simple/light, firm/heavy; and, fine dexterity. It also requires prolonged repetitive actions of feet. A transporter must be able to hear alarms, equipment alarms, client call, instructions for physicians/department staff, and overhead calls. This position may require long hours and weekend coverage when assigned.
Mental:
The transporter must be able to prioritize and use good judgement and must also be able to coordinate a variety of issues while being frequently interrupted. A transporter must communicate effectively and with tact in stressful situations.
Environmental:
This position works mostly indoor. However, it does require up to half the time in wet, humid conditions (non-weather); work near moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; and, occasionally in outdoor weather conditions. This position does work around infectious disease and in environment of infectious diseases. The typical noise level in this position can very from quiet to very loud noise.
