Film Archive Extern - Summer 2021 

Description

The Academy Film Archive extern will get an inside look at how one of the largest, most prominent film repositories in the world is continuing to collect, inventory, catalog, and make accessible film, video, and digital assets in the midst of an ongoing pandemic.

This unpaid externship will take place virtually over the summer and has a flexible schedule.

 

Description:

  • Attend and observe a variety of virtual archive discussions including general staff meetings, departmental meetings, new offers meetings, project-based meetings, and potential meetings with filmmakers and prospective donors.
  • Opportunities for in-depth conversations with archive professionals and departments who will provide a detailed view of their specific roles within the organization while providing opportunity to ask questions about the field.
  • Virtually shadow staff to learn how the Academy Film Archive performs day-to-day archival work such as creating new acquisition records, inventorying and cataloging media, drafting deeds of gift, preserving moving image materials, and fulfilling film loan requests.
 
Position Requirements
  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program.
  • A desire to work in film conservation and preservation.
  • An inherent interest in film history.

 

The Academy’s Gold Rising program (formerly Academy Gold) is an 8-week internship enhancement program that incorporates learning opportunities for a nationwide pool of diverse talent. Externs will not be part of the Academy’s Gold Rising program formally but will have the opportunity to participate in some select programming such as select panels and Lunch & Learn sessions.
