LICENSED MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELOR
(Mental Health Professional)  

A Licensed Mental Health Counselor works for a Community Mental Health Center under the general supervision of the Clinical Director.  A Licensed Mental Health Counselor provides therapy and counseling to citizens of a specified catchment area, who are seeking or are in need of mental health services.  The Mental Health Counselor, at the Director’s discretion, is also involved in education, public relations, evaluation and client-finding activities.

Examples of Work to be Performed:

  • Provides evaluative and therapeutic services to individuals, who have sought out mental health services on a voluntary basis.
  • Provides mental health services and evaluations for individuals who have been court-ordered to receive mental health services, who may have been hospitalized in a psychiatric hospital, who may have been mandated for outpatient care, and to those who may have been referred to the center.
  • In addition to individuals, provides services to families, parent/child, couples, groups, etc.
  • Attends Center staff meetings as appropriate.
  • Arranges for personal educational development (based on Center and individual need) according to individualized staff development plan, with approval from the Executive Director.
  • Collaborates with other social and helping agencies.

Employee’s Status:

  • Reports to the Clinical Director 
 
Position Requirements

Education and Special Requirements:

  • Graduation from a Master’s Degree program in Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, Agency Counseling, or Counseling Psychology (degree which qualifies for licensure as a mental health counselor in Iowa)
  • Licensed as a Social Worker or Mental Health Counselor in Iowa (LMHC).

We offer our clients a comprehensive set of services- ranging from outpatient therapy to drop-in peer support services. We currently have offices in Clarinda, Red Oak, and Shenandoah, Iowa.
