Description

Primary Responsibility:  Under general supervision, performs general law enforcement work to enforce the laws--Local, State and Federal--and to safeguard the lives, property and rights of the residents of Gilpin County.  Work involves responding to complaint calls, investigating crimes, mediating civil disputes, preparing reports and patrolling the County in an official vehicle to deter crime or apprehend violators or suspects, enforcing traffic laws, collecting and submitting evidence related to crimes, and testifying in court.

           

Supervised by:             Sergeant

 

In absence of Sergeant, use chain of command as established by Gilpin County Sheriff's

Office.

Main Job Duties:

Responds to complaint calls such as:  assaults, burglaries, traffic offenses, larceny (theft), domestic disputes, alarms, etc.  Investigates felonies, misdemeanors and petty offense crimes.  Provides assistance to other officers and law enforcement agencies as required.  Interviews witnesses.  Gathers and labels evidence, interviews and interrogates suspects and makes arrests..

Patrols Gilpin County in an official vehicle to enforce and maintain law and order, maintaining high visibility.  Inspects troublesome areas, checks security of business establishments and conducts additional patrols of residences as requested by homeowners.

Examines crime scenes to determine nature of law violations.  Secures and protects crime scenes and assists investigators as requested.  Conducts surveillance of specific areas when assigned.

Mediates and keeps the peace during civil disputes.

Utilizes computerized data entry equipment, various word processing and database programs to enter, store and/or retrieve information.

Assists in the Detention Facility and/or courts when needed.

Prepares a variety of reports related to criminal and civil cases including documenting locations of incidents and information on victims, suspects and other individuals.  Prepares and submits daily activity reports to Sergeants.

Operates two-way radio to receive and send information to Communications, deputies and other emergency service agencies.

Calls for, or responds to, agency assists where needed.

Enforces state and county traffic laws and provides traffic control where needed.

Locates and takes persons into custody on arrest warrants.  Makes arrests based on probable cause and warrants.  Identifies, collects and secures evidence or other property for safekeeping.

Appears in court as a witness to give testimony.

Cooperates with law enforcement officers from other governmental agencies in investigations and arrests.

Safely operates a County vehicle in normal and emergency conditions.

Maintains cleanliness of assigned workstation, patrol vehicle, uniform and weapons.

Provides basic medical attention in emergencies, including CPR, as required.

Maintains office proficiency standards in the use of firearms, tasers and other assigned equipment.

Additional Job Duties:

Performs other appropriate duties as assigned by Patrol Sergeants, Undersheriff or Sheriff and any duties needed to stabilize an emergency situation.

Prepares and executes search and arrest warrants.

Hours:

Must be available for shift work including weekends, holidays, and on-call coverage.

 
Position Requirements

Qualifications:

Education:  High School graduate or equivalent, or any combination of education and training that would provide the required knowledge and skills to perform the job.

  

Must be a minimum of 21 years of age.

Meets standards set forth in the Colorado Revised Statues.

Has knowledge of Federal, State and local laws.

Ability to:

Accurately and effectively transmit and receive information that is necessary to the accomplishment of goals and objectives, including effective written and oral communications in English; and the ability to listen.

Act quickly and calmly in emergency situations making proper judgments as to the correct course of action.

Use tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines.

Work well with others, and maintains a professional relationship with supervisors,  subordinates, outside law enforcement personnel and the public.

Follow complex instructions.

Must have a valid Colorado Driver’s License without any restriction due to driving record.  Must also be able to drive a county vehicle.

Must not have any felony convictions or misdemeanors designated by POST or any significant prior criminal activity.

Must pass background check, including traffic and criminal.

Certifications:

Is a Colorado Certified Peace Officer, or has all requirements necessary for, and nothing that would prevent, such certification within 30 days of employment, from an approved Colorado POST Academy.

CPR & First Aid certification within 90 days of employment.

Must possess FEMA ICS 100 and 700 certifications within 6 months of employment.

Obtain OSN within 6 months of request to CBI.

Obtain CCIC/NCIC and NIBRS Certification within 6 months of request to CBI.

Intoxilliyer Certification.

Pressure Point Control Tactics (PPCT) Certification.

Range Certified.

Taser Certification.

Experience:
