Senior Project Manager, Communications

About the Organization As a research and action organization, Center for Policing Equity (CPE) produces analyses identifying and reducing the causes of racial disparities in public safety. Using data-driven approaches to social justice, we use science to create levers for social, cultural, and policy change.

We are research scientists, race and equity experts, data virtuosos, and community trainers. We use data to build a more fair and just system. We partner with law enforcement and communities. Our aim is to bridge the divide of communication, generational mistrust, and suffering. But most of all, we are the path that science can forge towards public safety, community trust, and racial equity.

Position Description

CPE is looking for a Senior Project Manager (SPM) with a passion for social justice. The SPM will leverage their background in project management, stakeholder engagement, risk assessment, and change management to help scale and organize the Communications Team’s work, with the ultimate goal of eliminating burdensome and racially disparate policing.

This role will also collaborate with Project and Program Managers across the central, org-wide Program Management Office (PMO) to establish, promote, and enforce CPE’s standards for project management and operational protocols. This role reports to the Portfolio Manager, and collaborates closely with the Communications Manager, who owns the day-to-day priorities and operations of the Communications team.

About CPE’s Communications Team

The Communications team manages and creates all internal and external messaging and media for CPE consisting of our everyday communication efforts and long-term strategic planning. As the work of CPE expands, the Communications team is charged with ensuring that our brand and reputation are on par with our work for our stakeholders. We partner closely with a Communications agency to assist and produce key print and broadcast media while continually working to nurture our social media presence.

About the Program Management Office

CPE recognizes project management as a core function of the organization; in 2019, we established a Program Management Office (PMO) to evolve, promote, and enforce CPE’s standards for project management. The PMO itself is a centralized team of project management professionals throughout the organization to provide PM support to their assigned division -- so the Senior Project Manager for Communications is situated within the PMO and supported by a team of professionals of the same discipline, but most of their active time is spent in direct collaboration with the members of the Communications team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support Communications team members in clarifying project goals and planning, monitoring, and delivering projects

  • Ensure adequate communication and hand-off of tasks between Communications and its collaborators, including external partners and internal stakeholders

    • Assessing and managing risks to project success

    • Promoting consistent adoption of operating standards

    • Supporting team members in performing retrospectives to assess and improve processes

    • Supporting team members in adopting measurement and evaluation (M&E) practices and tracking of key performance indicators (KPIs)

  • Provide project management and operational support to the Portfolio Manager, as needed

Qualifications (required)

  • 3-5 years of work experience in project management

  • Demonstrated organizational and critical-thinking skills needed to work effectively on multiple projects with competing priorities

  • Demonstrated experience managing projects in the communications, public relations, marketing, or media space(s)

  • Ability to proactively surface and diagnose problems and find solutions

  • Ability to quickly adapt and apply new tools and processes to a growing organization
