POSITION SUMMARY: The Director of Environmental Health Services (EHS) provides leadership and management within the Tohono O'odham Nation Health Care (TONHC), Clinical Services. The Director of EHS is the principle Professional Environmental Health Specialist representing the Tohono O’odham Nation and its Department of Health and Human Services. The Director of EHS will direct prevention strategies and recommendations for corrective interventions to promote health and minimize illness/injury impacted by environmental health matters. The incumbent works under the general supervision of the Medical Officer Administrator (Clinical Director).

SCOPE OF WORK: The mission is to promote safe, reliable, effective, and economical use of resources and through the delivery of environmental health services to TONHC and the Tohono O’odham Nation. Program components will provide General and Institutional EH, Environmental Sustainability, and community Injury Prevention. Program emphases include: 1) routine and follow-up surveys of the built environment (homes and tribal facilities); 2) professional advice and technical consultation; 3) investigations for emergent/emergency issues such as food-borne illness and communicable disease outbreaks, indoor air quality, etc. 4) policy development; and 5) training.

 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors, Master’s, or Doctoral degree in environmental health accredited by the NationalEnvironmental Health Science and Protection Accreditation Council.
  • Master’s degree in Public Health or graduate level coursework in Public Health
  • Three or more years as an Environmental Health professional.
  • One year of supervisory experience.

Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:

  • Must possess and maintain a current/valid professional registration as a Registered Sanitarian (RS) orRegistered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) by any State or the National Environmental HealthAssociation (NEHA) or a state with reciprocal registration.
  • Certification in Industrial Hygiene, Safety Management or Hazardous Materials preferred.
  • Upon recommendation for hire a criminal background and National FBI check is required to determinesuitability for hire.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last threeyears).
  • Must submit a 39-month driving record with the employment application.
  • Based on the department’s needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the TohonoO’odham Language and English as a condition of employment.

About the Organization The Tohono O'odham Nation is a federally-recognized tribe that includes approximately 28,000 members occupying tribal lands in Southwestern Arizona. The Nation is the second largest reservations in Arizona in both population and geographical size, with a land base of 2.8 million acres and 4,460 square miles, approximately the size of the State of Connecticut. Its four non-contiguous segments total more than 2.8 million acres at an elevation of 2,674 feet.
